Ok so after quick chat with Kane while placing my order I have gone with Jigstar Katana PE4 which hes loading on the reel. Did a bit of research last night & see the Katana is nice n thin at .32 & punches out good poundage at PE4 66lb
So happy days

I use returned from the 3 Kings having spools all my reels with Katana braid. I'm impressed with this braid and it never let me down. Katana is an 8 carrier so round, smooth and strong but at really good prices.
give it death!

Yeah well priced Chris, have never used it before so looking forward to giving a go. Kane recommended it & I trust he would be upfront about this as it's going onto one of his new Slammers. So happy days mate!

Hi,
All braid is made from PE, what you pay for is the knitting.  Jigman ultra is knitted tighter than jigman, so it packs better on the reel, is rounder, and has higher abrasion / wear resistance.
Both are eight carrier, thats 8 main fibers knitted together.
Most cheap braid is four carrier that why it's "lumpy" and thats why cheap braid get microscopically torn quicker and fails sooner.

It takes more machine time to knit it tighter so it costs more, thats why often thinner line weight cost more than heavier .

cheers  Greg

Can vouch for the jigstar katana braid being very good in my opinion.

Ebay is best, plenty of reputable stores that stock it but price does varyWink

Just a quick update, I had a rather unfortunate first outing recently with the Katana PE4. I had two hookups & on both occasions the braid broke. I should add at this point that neither I or my supplier are exactly sure why this happened. I have changed it out for Jigman Ultra & will send samples off to my supplier.
I want to reiterate that I am not bagging Jigstar or the Katana product & at this time it is unknown what caused the breakages. Just wanted to update this thread.
Cheers Pete

Would it not have been better to find out what the problem was first before putting it up here?
It could have been something simple like a damaged guide....
By all accounts a very good braid

Hi Rob, have checked the guides, double checked the drag setting, even got the charter skipper to check the drag & as I stated this post is just an updated not jumping to conclusions or bagging anyone. Hope this answers your question.

Tend to agree Rob. Would piss me off tho.

Don't want to hijack the thread or anything so tell me if this is out of line, but has anyone had experience with the Shimano Ocea EX8 braid. I've seen it on a few of the japanese sites, breaking strains seem pretty impressive:
PE1=20lb
PE2=40lb
PE3=60lb
PE6=99lb
PE8=121lb

Can buy it in 600m spools, might look at bringing some in to have a crack with.

Between Alan Syme, Jig Star Africa and ourselves, we have used Katana braid this summer at the 3Kings for 20 days of jigging that only these frontier locations can regularly offer,
NO FAILURES!

I remember previous examples complaining of similar breakages on Jigman Ultra and several other braid brands. On one occasion, I asked the store just how they were spooling the braid and how they were applying tension to it. The upshot was that they were probably incorrectly applying braid tension and had damaged the braid.

I spool all my reels on my own line spooling machine that has the correct line tensioning device and have never had issues with my reel filling. These reels were used in the previous mentioned Kings trips.

I am not levelling accusations at the store or user who has spooled the braid but care needs to be taken when undertaking braid spooling. Braid does not like heat that is generated when applying line tension with even a wet glove or rag,, applying tension by braking the supply spool (under tension, the braid digs in between the wraps on the supply spool and becomes damaged when it is ripped out). Avoid braid heat when spooling and you will find the braid will deliver close to what the label states. This is much more obvious for the light thinner braids.

Peter, have the Katana braid returned to me and I will conduct a few tests over the used braid and compare against fresh braid then report back to Kane.
give it death!
