Hi there, does anyone know what this fish is? I thought it might be a blue cod but I'm unsure. Sorry, I only took this 1 photo before I threw it back in the drink.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

That is a Spotty. good size. Hard to tell from pic if male or female colouring. What area was it caught.   Have caught a few near rocky zones near manukau heads up to 30cm long.  They seem to increase in numbers further south. Wellington and ,marlbourgh sounds have plenty.

Thanks for the info! In the sun it shone pink and blue, quite a pretty fish. I caught it at the ladies bay stairs in Auckland. It was a little bit under 25cm and I couldn't find it on the nz fishing app so I wasn't sure if there was a size limit or not. I'm guessing it falls under "all other finfish".

25 cm is a very good size . usually much smaller.  Amazing where you caught it. Lately i have wondered why no spotties in the gulf. And here it is. First one i have seen in auckland  east coast. . Male and female can be quite different colouration. A look on the web should find pics showing the difference.

Spotted wrasse or paketi, mostly called a spottie, they are very common in rocky areas, I used to catch heaps of them in the Waitemata & Tamaki river as a kid. There is no size limit.

I used to catch heaps as a kid at the wharves in port Nelson ..... now there are fences to stop  such behaviour.
We used to get into the rubbish bins at the back of some fish and chip shop ( probly Guytons   like 1976-78 ) and get  all the crispy batter bits they scoop of the top of the vats  and  chuck them in  and try to jag herrings with a treble hook ( the water was boiling with fish untill they had eaten it all ), we also had a sort of net made from a push bike wheel and chicken mesh . Good times
