hi the angler.
they are good and do the job, I've landed lots of good sized gts on them. I like the 8 ft 2 length for long casting into the reef but some others prefer a rod shorter than this for the fight. I like the length as it means my lures goes further and spends more time on/in the water. my theory is you have to hook the fish first before you worry about the leverage fighting it from a longer rod

good bang for buck and certainly can handle most nz kingfish situations. they are not a carpenter or jigging master etc but neither is the price.

daiwa has some good reasonably priced options also, have a look what Milan and Nathan use on big angry fish as examples.

shimano kaibutsu have the two standard models available in nz that I am aware of, others will know more than me, eg Keiren from shimano on here.

but from what I understand:

shimano kaibutsu pencil instrument is more for stickbaiting

shimano kaibutsu caranax is more for popping

but either can do both within reason, I brought the caranax as it was stiffer for popping in the tropics and had a higher pe rating. matched mine with a stella 18k and it does the business.

my 5 cents anyway, others may have differing views but hope this helps Smile

Hi Angler,

I have a Shimano Kaibutsu Caranx for sale if you're interested. $350 plus p&p. It is in mint condition. Not a mark on it.

Also have an Offshore Illusion multi weight spin 24 - 37kg which I will sell for $400 plus p&p. This would be a much better match for Kingi fishing. It has a softer action which suits stickbaits a lot better. Ton's of stopping power when you need it. Also in mint condition.

Only selling because I have upgraded.

PM me if you're interested in either rod.

The offshore blows the kaibutsu out of the water , go the kaibutsu if you don't like your spine .

the 7ft aint too bad for poppers as they are a lot stiffer than the 76, still not ideal but id own one for a popper rod..

big difference in casting distance of a 7 ft rod v longer one, I once used a 7 ft 6 and that was too short for me, just my opinion.

Yep can't seem to get much distance , lack of practise maybe ? .7 ft does seem short for a popper rod .
If I was to sell it to buy a longer one does anyone know what a illusion series 24 37 7ft popper rod in very good nick would fetch on the second hand market , kind of put of kaibutsus now may have to find a bigger offshore .

Kaibutsu Caranx is excellent for what is was built for i.e casting and working big poppers. The Kaibutsu Pencil Instrument is designed for stick baits and is also very good for that application.
