Hi guys, was out on my boat today and on the way home going bout 30knots the alarm started going off,i immediately backed off and the motor started shuddering,it would do about 12 knots like nothing was wrong, then when I go a bit faster it starts shuddering and would not go any faster than 15 knots so we limped home, any ideas on problem would be greatly appreciated!thanks guys

for the alarm to go off & stay constant bleep , a sign of over heat , the shuddering , could be one of many possible causes  , i would start with a spark tester first & then follow through  the trouble shooting process , & only getting up to 15 knots tells me you are probably not gettin spark on all the plugs , or carb problems

If you have an alarm sound, the motor will shudder at about 2500 rpm. There is a built in rev limiter when the alarm sounds to avoid doing major engine damage.
Two causes of constant alarm on your motor is
1 - Overheat
2 - Fuel restriction. That motor has a vacuum switch fitted to fuel system.

Worst advice I have ever heard!!!!

Get the water pump serviced and replace the thermostats. Cost you prob $300

Or you could risk it and need a 5k rebuild.... I'd go the $300 option personally.

the word " shuddering ",  to me its not just a question of replacing water pump & thermostat ,is not going to make it go faster than the present 15 knots hes getting now i think its more than just this .

For what my opinion is worth ..... I reckon OP is on the money with this one.  Better to spend the three hundy or so he recommends than to just box on and find you are faced with a massive bill later which could so easily have been avoided.  If it were me I would be asking OP for his advice as to the best mechanic in your area so you can get this job done correctly.

Semper in excreta sumus, solum profundum variat....
