Have started looking at boats with she who must be obeyed.

We are based on the Aucklands North Shore and are looking for a boat primary for the two of us - but sometimes fishing up to 4 people.

We fish - not really into cruising.

We want a boat that is capable of taking us as far as great barrier (and home again safely).

When there are just the two of us we will occasionally over night onboard, but are not needing much in the way of creature comforts - just the ability for a couple to get their heads down for a few hours.

No looking for a glass boat.

The two that we have looked at currently are the Surtees Game fisher and the extreme game king.

First looks is that the Extreme is very, very, very solid and well put together.  But then I know people just love their Surtees (and for good reason).

Does anyone here with more experience than myself have ideas about the advantages of one over the other?

Any known issues?

Thanks all for your help.

Chris

Me personally would be looking a little bigger...

I've had a 6m HT and have taken it regularly 40miles offshore, but now have a 6.5m HT and feel far more comfortable in doing that, particularly if the weather blows up.
The smaller boat won't give much cabin room if overnighting, and your cockpit space will be limited if you're having 4 POB.

How ever that said, I guess numerous factors like budget, vehicle towing capacity and what not have to be considered...

Surtees are a well built boat, had a 6.1mt HT Barcrusher, nice boat, the Extreme I looked closely to the 650 Gameking but didn't buy it as the budget didn't quite stretch that far...lol, nicely built boat though...

Plenty around to choose from, how about the McLay 6m HT?

Good luck in your quest...Thumbs Up

speaking with extreme at the recent boatshow, they said they wouldnt let any boats leave their factory without either nyalic or paint on them. pretty much discounts them straight away for me as i want neither.

i still cannot understand why extreme also continue with sidepockets in the cockpit which cannot accommodate a 7ft rod or large speargun?

the cabins on both boats you mention are marginal if you are of normal height and want to stretch out whilst lying down - it may be a matter of taking fold out cots and sleeping under the dropback in the cockpit. without a full bulkhead separating the cabin, you may be able to get surtees to extend the bunkbases?

have you priced them? is there much difference? lots of extreme packages with etecs on them Disapprove

resale on both likely to be strong.

bit of a coin toss without first hand experience.

as for how they go, couldnt say as i havent been on either. a seatrial might decide it for you.

which ever way you go, make sure you get 'tabs and go for maximum horsepower.

No disintegrations!

I had a 570 Sportfisher, (open boat) for a couple of years before upgrading to the 610 Gameking, which I have now owned for two years.  My only regret is that I don't own the new shape as there is significantly more width inside the hard top on the new models.

I haven't had anything to do with the 5.8 Surtees but have a few mates with 5.5 Workmates.  They all seem to like their boats but after spending a lot of time on an Extreme I'm afraid that I just don't enjoy enjoy a day on the water anywhere near as much when I'm in a Surtees.  Each to their own though, you really have to do some sea trials in various conditions to see what you feel is the best for your situation and budget etc.

Personally, having owned two Extremes I am quite sure that my next boat will also be an Extreme.  Another great thing about Extreme Boats is that the market isn't flooded with them, unlike the Workmate, which seems to be the ocean going equivilant of the Toyota Corolla.  Consequently when you come to sell or trade you will likely find that there is a strong market for your second hand boat and you will get good money for it, (that's my experience anyway).

Spoke to a guy on the water on the weekend.  He had a nice looking Surtees Game Fisher 5.8.  He was very happy with it, but wished he'd opted for 130HP rather than the 115HP he went with.

We've got the 6.1 Game Fisher and we're really happy with it.  Not sure whether the 30cm difference between the 5.8 and the 6.1 is in the cockpit or the cabin.  I find that I can sleep "comfortably" in the cabin of the 6.1 (I'm 5'10").

Cheers.

We did a bit of looking around before settling on an Extreme 610. LOVE IT.
Never been on a Surtees- but took a guy to the Mokes who was blown away by the Extreme. He seemed to think the smoothness of ride was comparable, but said the Surtees have a tendancy to be "pushed around" by a swell.
Actually, Surtees were only in the running for about 5 mins, till the Mrs saw one, and put it in the "way too bloody ugly" basket.Evil Smile
Oh, Bounty, I have no trouble fitting a 140 Rob Allen gun in the side compartment- might be a different story in the 580 though

Comparing what you get between the two makes, I would guess the Extreme will be a bit more, you can see the extra work that goes into it. Surtees hardtop is basically just a frame for screen/windows, cabin is simple folded Ali. Extreme base package includes VHF, Lined cabin, Live bait tank, Fuel filter.
I reckon the 80 litre tank in the Extreme is not really big enough- have a chat to them they might be able to make it bigger

I was looking at both these a year ago, and ended up going for the Extreme GK570 with a Honda 115.

I found the Extreme way cheaper than the Surtees 5.8 - maybe because the 5.8 was a new model then, mind you the 570 was also newly redesigned.

Second that spear junkie - 80 litres is ok, but would be nice to have something bigger for the longer trips (i.e. to the Barrier)

Other differences that I noted ...
Hull thickness: Extreme 5mm, Surtees 4mm
Surtees metal bait board is great unless you want anyone to sit on the rear seat where it is about at their head height - the Extreme palstic foldaway/removable one is better in this respect.
Everything seemed to be extra on the Surtees, whereas the Extreme had loads included in the base price.

Was/am disappointed with the quality of the welding on the extreme I got - looks like chicken poo in places. The ones at the show were ok, so maybe I got a duff welder. I also dislike the nylac as it reacts not only to petrol but also sunblock! Extreme have another clear finish that they are trialling - can't remember the name of it - worth investigating though - Contact Berni

Really pleased with the extreme, good ride - even more pleased with the Honda - maybe would go for the 135 next time?

Hi Chris,

I'm looking at same 2 boats with exception I'm looking at a Sportee surtees as opposed to the hardtop to get it in my shed, but haven't yet been able to test ride either.

However points I've noted so far.

Earlier Extremes had pretty crappy welding - new ones I've seen are alot better. Extreme has a smaller cockpit area than the 5.8 surtees. Extreme hull has been designed by a boat designer, however flooding keel cannot be shut off like Extreme. This means you can't carry extra ballast if you want a better ride in heavy seas, and for beach launching like we do, can see a hull full of water is going to make it alot harder to man handle in the surf, or hauling it onto the trailer when bottomed ou on the sand.

Surtees trailers only have a pair of wobbles rollers each side at the back, where extreme have a pair of 4 rollers, meaning the boat can be retrieved from the sand easier.

The extreme seems to be beamier at the waterline than the surtees, so does this mean it's going to be more stable at anchor???
Extreme is prettier, but surtees has better access to hatch.
I'm over 6ft, and don't have a need to overnight, but I wouldn't want to overnight in either of these, I think they are too small. Also wouldn't be too keen on travelling to barrier in a boat under 6mtrs.
Like I said, these are just my findings and thoughts so far, without having the experience of test riding either.

Correction, that should read that the Surtees flooding keel can be shut off, and Extreme can't

my 5.5 has been takin to barrier a couple times by the previce owner but like anything you gotta pic ya weather aye my surtees trailer has 8 sets of doubles on it so maybe they change to suit owners needs? iv found that once you open the keel its a big differnce aye but its also good to shut it to keep the water out as i do shallow water lunching. i like the fact tah the surtees is built to fish aye no fancy s@#t to try wash etc just all round awesome. but again each to there own aye probly the only 2 boats you can compere together?

Gimmick in my opinion, if the Surtees wasn't such a light weight hull it wouldn't need to carry extra ballast for stability.  There are two large bins under the floor on the Extreme that you can flood with water if you really want to carry some extra weight.

Exactly, so why the need for a shut off flap at the back of the keel channel?  Gimmick!

Thanks all for all the comments and thoughts so far.

I'm interested about the comments about a boat <6 m going to barrier. I understand that (as always) weather plays a huge part but this is something that is important to us. Is this a comfort or a safety issue (we have not done much 'far out' fishing)

Again thanks for all the effort people have put into replying.
