I'm finding some wind knots that I have been getting around the guides pretty frustrating lately, especially when the action is hot on the surface. My anxiety levels seem to go through the roof when such is going down. Just wondering if this is simply down to types of braid or becoming somewhat lazidazical in the casting method? Can't really work out what I would be doing wrong. One of my mates on here uses top of the line casting Varivas braid, and rekons it is not even an issue he experiences. So is it braid or angler? Cheers.

What type of braid are you using mate?

Never had any issues with the xzoga braid but did along time back with some rapala titanium.

I was using 30lb powerpro, and it casts very well on my Ultegra & low rider guides, never ever had an issue. Then using my Okuma VS65 and 50lb powerpro I had numerous issues, always in the same place, usually 2 wind knots 30yds form the lure. Tried using SUfix Performance braid, much the same problem. I noticed when I cast and 'snapped' the cast at the end (instead of a steady smooth swing) it would wind knot more. Using lighter lures it would wind knot more as well as I think a heavy lure meant the line would wind on tighter. The biggest difference has been taking more braid off the reel and I have almost eliminated it.
My advice - take 20-30 yds of braid off, try casting, if not, take another 20-30yds yds off. If that doesnt work, buy some daiwa saltiga boat braid, good breaking strain for the diameter and do not over fill. It could be a problem wiht the line lay of the reel. I have seen old daiwas lay braid unevenly and it caused real problems. (May not be the reel but worth considering if it is not newer technology)...my 3cents

Cheers Snapazapa, that could be making a bit of sense. Was mixing up how long I was dropping the lure prior to casting last time out owing to other people's position on the boat. Those Owner ST trebles are death on a string waiting to happen, so was playing it cautious a bit when casting. Will put such to practice.

The weight lures I was using were pretty much max for my set up, and was using some light poppers and still stumbling over issue. So don't think that was the issue.

It always happens around my first guide.

Found I was getting them later in the day once I was getting lazy. I found your action when retrieving has allot to do with it. if you get loose wraps of line on the spool then when you cast they tend to fal off in a bunch. also if your spool is to full can cause issues etc. you been doing well fishi?

Yep,I think your spot on there too Hookerpuka,I now try to keep more tension while retreiving.

Edit;I also found that i was trying to hard to do big sweeps, have cut the sweeps down 1/3 and relaxed more, found that my timing got alot better.

Yep loose loops are the main problem here, bloody hard to prevent. I have seen it happen with both novice and expert anglers.
If it is a consistent problem then some things to look at are spool capacity, too much line is a big cause. Change the braid out completely if it keeps happening.

One tip too if you getting wind knots in the line use a crochet hook to pick them out, some guys simply pull them out but i feel this may damage the line a bit.

What guides are you running on the rod mate? Some reverse the first guide for better casting...
It would seem if it is happening at the first guide all the time there is some reason for it, can you move your reel seat? can you change reels or even rods? Might pay to ask some of the rod builders??

Fuji made a self detangling guide - K series... for the problems associated with braid...kinda cool to watch a wind knot in super slow mo...

Was just about to say that, the new Jigging Master popper rods and Shore Game have the new K series guides on them, they look rather cool and should fix the problem.
Sometimes it can be the braid though, had a few problems once before and now use tuffline XP seems to be rather good for the price.

main cause of wind knots is the cast line leaving the rod tip slows down its speed  due to the lure causing drag in the air, the line leaving the reel spool is still rocketing off the reel due to its thin nature and lack of resistence ( it isnt affected by drag like the lure) .its leaving the reel in loops and gets to the point where the lure is no longer dragging the braid off  the spool in small loops at speed its naturally free flowing and the loops get bigger..they will loop over the 1st guide causing a breakage or it will bunch up at the 1st guide and  make a knot before the lure drags the messy knot thru all the rest of the guides.this is a big problem with single foot guides on s/b rods..i spent ages with Kojak trying to fix this problem on my custom rods and production rods..reversing the 1st guide or stripper guide  and using a double foot guide works very well.if going to this amount of effort replacing it with a larger guide is more effective.most production rods use the bare minimum guides  and the smallest they can.this can save lots of $$ over millions of rods, the second main reason i found was bulky knots, casting with the leader on the spool is good for giving it as big heav but the  braid to leader knot going thru the guides slows the  line down ,a slim  neat knot fixed this with s/b fishing and ive found the yucatan is spot on..new braid is also alot more prone to wind knots as its slippery and fly off the spool extremly quickly...loosly packed line is another, after getting busted off applying hand pressure to the retieved braid packing it tight onto the spool is a good idea ...hope this helps

in my opinion make of braid isnt a huge  problem except when brand new ,some braids like suffix pro are very slippery or smooth where as others like tuf line are a bit ruffer.when the braid is used for a while it becomes worn or the coating on it become warn and it settles down in the spool and the problem happens less often

Yip and could be your leader, had probs when using flouro, and shorten your leader so knot is not on the reel. I used to loose 2 or three lures a trip now maybe a tangle once every 20 trips, good luck

Yeah my first guide is reversed, but it's not all that big. Put what you cats suggested into practice today and no knots.
