Now that the SP bug has finally infected me. My immunity was high due to lack of technique thus lack of fish....but now, I little technique and Thumbs%20Up. Anyway - my Stella2500 is now the pick of the bunch for a crack at a few Snapper Anzac Day.
My question - I was thinking of getting another Stella, just 'cos it's so awesome and fun to use..I was thinking of going even lighter, the 2500 handles the 60cm Snaps piece of cake on 4kg braid, especially since I drifting over sand mainly, therefore a good fight but without bustoffs on rocks. Thus the 1000 seems a good choice for 3kg braid? Also what would be the ultimate in rods to use with it? The Shimano I have is outstanding. Is there any advantage to getting a Custom rod made, or in fact could this be a disadvantage in this case?
 
I do have a Trinidad12 with 4kg braid on which I will try out tomorrow, but being an overhead reel it'll be interesting to note the differences.....?

The T-Curve Flight 702 Spin would match up real nice on a Stella in my opinion.

Although i haven't seen these available in NZ, I have used one coupled with a Twinpower 4000 recently that I borrowed from a couple of Aussie lads we had over here ...was an awesome bits of kit and knocked over kings to 20kg!....I am sure one of the local dealers could get one in if you asked nicely?

I'm thinking about ordering one of the spiral wrapped T-Curve Flights (66BC) that I thought I'd match up with a Shimano Calais DC or maybe a Calcutta TE DC in the near future.

Boulder me ol' Freezer!

The T-Curve Flight Spin rod was a dream to use....nicely balanced, but thought it was a tad on the light side for the TP4000 with 7.5kg braid.....would like to have used it in anger with a 2500 sized reel and 5kg.

The spiral wrapped T-Curve Flight coupled with a Calcutta TE was just awesome and really opened up a whole bunch more TAS opportunities ....Lee had 8kg braid on his "bait caster" SP rig i think and it sung the sweetest song!

Initially I thought about converting my TLD5 to a SP reel, but since decided they just don't have the retrieve for deep reef prospecting or for achieving kingfish tempting speeds!!

The Ian Miller T-Curve is soooo suited the the Twin Power 4000 that it wouldn't be fair to try and compare "apples with peaches"

mmmmmm......motorbike riding peaches!

My current Stella2500 is matched with a Shimano Backbone series 7'6" Graphite 3-5kg 2 piece rod. It is veeerrrry nice. Love the cork grips and it's so light.
 
Nothing wrong with quality Maxi-bling, or peaches on my motorbike Smile

Expresso I use my calcutta 400b spooled up with 4kg braid and I love it. Great casting, your more in contact with your sp when it's free spooling down so it's easier to feel hits on the drop and react to them. Even using light 1/4 oz jig heads the braid runs off freely. And you can use it to "strayline" SP's with by keeping it in freespool whilst at anchor. I'm currently experimenting with this and having great results. I'd imagine your Trini would be very similar and would recommend you give it a try. Would like to hear what you think

If you want to go real light with the braid grant you may need to be careful with the rod you choose due to the new single foot guides catching the braid during casting.ive sent ya a pm today explaining all.Doesnt seem to happen with the 6pd plus braid.

What about snagging on the slightly (but not much) older fuji lowrider guides is it the same sort of problem  do you know Wayne ?

 A wee bit more weight in the low riders that those new wizz bang single foots but its marginal surely.....isn't it ???? Confused

Been working hard to sort this out moocha, and the only thing that works is a double foot fuji concept as the 1st guide.Even going to change the one on the ian miller t curve.This doesnt happen with the heavier braids.Ive had a bit more luck when i top shot 6 mtrs of 5 pd fluoro carbon as a leader but on the weekend it snagged on the third guide during a cast and snapped loosing 50 mtrs of braid...its gettin to the stage i dont use it as often as i want too. caught a 8 kg king on 1 pd  last weekend on the sand casting around a huge tree off te kaha in 50 mtrs of water .Also kahawai to 2.6 kgs off the beach. but you get sick of tying nots real quick with 1 pd braid ...

Sounds bloody frustrating Wayne.. but your getting good results though 8kg Kingie on 1LB shyte nice one.  I get sick of tying and re tying knots with 6lb (esp when family members snag it and run over it Angry) so I can imagine how bad 1lb is.
What braid are you using ?

Its berkley 1pd clear fireline and breaks well above 1pd im guessing it breaks at 3kgs,use 5 0r 7pd fluoro carbon leader.The kingi was a real buzz with a school of 10 or so following it to the boat each time (viz at T K was 60 ft under water and 30 ft out of  the boat )The kingi was easy as we followed it with the boat keeping the line strait up and down.The kahawai  destroyed the lot, on one fish i had 130 mtrs of braid out and got busted.Got to the stage were i tied the jig head strait to the braid and the kings and kahawai still hit with avengence.used stormbringers anchovie rubbers and they out performed the gulp hands down.Even better than the live anchovies we caught.Cant post any pics as my house was robbed last friday and we lost alot of stuff inc camera with all the photos of the marlin we caught at nth cape at easter .SO went to TK camera less and had the best weekend diving weve ever had..even caught a big boar...Changed my 1pd rig to a Twin power 2500 on a shimano Blue water t curve 1 to 3 kg rod and berkley braid.This has caught a 5.1 kg snapper,2.6kg kahawai and a 8 kg kingi so im pretty shure its the beez neez...The mongrels didnt get any of my tackle or rods etc in the robbery (didnt go into garage ),lucky as i just brought 2 blackmajic reels and the twin power recently.....

Hi Expresso,

Have a word with Tiny Coe from Top Catch Bait and Tackle Clevedon, his rods (Synit) featured on Geoff Thomas's Show last week, part two of that show is on Saturday TV3 at 5.00pm. He has designed this rod with the Kiwi Fisho in mind and would be a perfect match for your Stella. The rods aren't cheap, just great to fish with, I use one and I have tried all the off the shelf brands. Tiny's contact details are 021 330 508. If that's not what you are looking for try a Shimano Starlo Stix 5-8kg 2pc or a Shimano Raider if you can find one, both of these will match your Stella. The T-Curve is a nice rod but if yopu intend to do a lot of casting you better have arms like Poppeye as the weigh a ton for a softbait rod, a Synit rod is just under 200gms.

My  T Curve is lighter than the starlo stix and the raider rod.
A stella 1000 is what espresso,s buying and would be a bit small for a 6 to 8kg rod.May be a 1 to 3kg or a 2 to 4kg rod would be suitable.
Totally my opinion of course but a light rod (1 to 3kg )matched with the stella 1000 and light braid would be the shizzle... ive found that the lighter you go the less important lots of drag is and the more important smooth
 drag is....
