I have an old solid glass surfcaster that all the rings are mashed on . Got new rings from Marine deals  and the plan is to  fit em all , But  the varnish or whatever it is painted over the rod is pealing / bubbling off  in places so Im thinkin  some sort of fibreglass friendly stripper may be the go , and what do I spray onto fibreglass to replace this coating , before or after I fit the rings  ( Im  using Fuji a grade polyester thread and clear epoxy  to stick them on ). 
Any hints or tip from those who have done a bit of this would be appreciated .
I wish I was young again .... Id be heaps smarter than this time

An old blunt knife seems to be the way to go to remove the peeling varnish.

If your using flexi-coat on your threads then you can use it to re-coat the whole rod with it, just make sure its only a thin coat unlike what you would put on the threads. It pays to be able to have the rod slowly turning as the flex-coat is drying to get nice even looking finish, I have with some rods I have repaired just gone striaght over the existing rod finish and you would hardly notice the underneath coating..

You will need to make or borrow a rod lathe to do a good job. I have done some very amateur type rebuilds and it's not a patch on a pro job
Best gurnard fisherman in my street

Ohhh I forgot, it would be far cheaper to buy a good surf rod new, but that's not the point and I get that.

Over the years I made a lot of rods , spin , surf ,fly and everything in-between. Always had trouble when it came time to coat bindings etc . We were doing a sheep on the spit one day and it clicked , a quick totoo on dad's lathe and an adaptor to hold a rod was made . A little more time and some rollers were produced. That was a long ways ago , but I still have that spit motor , but no time for building rods or cooking sheep ! .
