This may be something that is common knowledge but it's new to me, was on the herald website today.

If you delve deeper into the guide there is plenty of good info, including information on concerns of most common fish species.

A good example is the by-catch issues with arrow squid, contributing to deaths of thousands of birds and hundreds of sea lions in the Auckland Island fishery.

Most of us here probably don't buy much seafood but it's good information to have.

I would highly question some of the assertions on this website...

To put it in perspective New Zealand is widely recognized as the benchmark for fisheries management.

Red neck hunters. Forest and Bird do some great work. The criteria in their species guide looks a bit dodgy though.

As for NZ being the benchmark in fisheries management, not entirely sure of that

As long as Twig and Tweet stay naked dancing in the Forest I will remain happily neutral to their rantings
If they get into saving kelp forest as well I guarantee it will end in tears for someone

Despite having laid a noise complaint against F&B (true story) I think their fringe element are pretty much harmless and without groups like them we would have less wild country to hunt and probably a fishery in far worse condition.

You only have to go back to the debate on here around the reduction in snapper limits in the Hauraki Gulf to see that while they F&B might represent one end of the scale there are plenty at the other end only to happy to rape and pillage everything.

^agreed. I might not agree with it a lot of the time, but I'm glad they have a voice.

If their data is robust enough to disprove the sustainability of fisheries quotas, you'd think that it'd be used to change the fisheries quotas.

Prepare your tinfoil hats, gentlemen.

F & B do some great work as mentioned above, on the other hand so much of their info , like with Green peace, is rather selective and very dubious....bird numbers after the Rena.. based on huge overseas spillage numbers.. and eventually , in fine print know one notices refuted months later...
list can go on and on...
And basically a mouth piece for DoC.. but then any conservation project whatever has to bow down to the deskjockies at DoC anyway to have anything happen... stuff up or not... and then takes years of wasted meetings, shuffling papers and pulling wasted budgets at taxpayers expense...

On the other hand we can mock Mallard.....well its the thing to do right now.... time frame  30 to 50 yrs...Really?  lets see Capt Kirk had his  Science fiction communicator..   now we have our smart phones that make his communicator look like brick cell phone 10/15 years ago  and our smart phones have more computing power than what was used to put man on the moon.
The technology to re create the Moa is still in its infancy...but beyond the Si Fi realms.
And so was man on the moon when Kennedy announced it to happen within the decade...
Those who mock , may like to forget they did within their own lifetime....

I guess I must have missed the previous debate(s) on this topic.

I think it's good to see the information out there and easily accessible by the general public at least, even if it is 'dubious'.

As for New Zealand being the benchmark for fisheries management, even if that is true it still only puts us at the top of a bad pile.

Not quite sure how a country that still allows shark finning can be considered the benchmark of anything though...

Your not wrong but my point is if we can't eat (ie red status) them in New Zealand then the rest of the world is well and truly up the creek.

Shark finning is its own issue, the sharks are still part of the quota and are managed. It is an ethical issue.. I'm all for banning it or alternatively making coms take the whole carcass.

agreed. Need one end of the spectrum to cancel out the other. They're mad though. Their flier had a lutjanid snapper image instead of our porgy, as does this article. Rookies

I don't like their views on ridding nz of all introduced mammals, and their love of 1080 . As far as tree hugging goes , we are all guilty of that anyway I suspect .
