I am thinking about a trip to the 3 Kings and $$ wise it is at the extent of my capability.

It is a combination of big game and kings/puka.  Jigging wise I currently have a Tyrnos 16 ( too heavy really but I know that) and a Daiwa Monster Mesh 300grm PE 6-8 currently spooled with 50 lb braid.  Would this set be sufficient if I got it re spooled with 80lb for the 3 Kings?

Cheers

Def going undergunned with that mate

I'd take a bare minimum of 2 decent 80lb sets with a lot more capacity on the reels.

It depends on the boat you are going on and what fish you plan to target.

Marlin is 80w's

puka and kings are 30w or 50w (or something similar)  for bait fishing
80lb braid

jigging: you will need 2 or 3 top quality 80lb jigging reels with matching rods. 400/500gram rods
with plenty of 400-500 gram jigs.

Go to Yeehaa and ask for John, he will sort you out.

Im off to the kings next march. Will be jigging a couple of days. Need to buy some new gear, I prefer a light set up if possible. I have a jm pe4, talica 12. Thinking of buying an accurate 600n or nn. Or jm pe6. Or even a pimped diawa. Spooled with 80lb. For rods my existing js250 , kojak acid , jm150 and buy a js or jm 350. Could go to 400 but that could be too broomstick like. Thoughts ?

If your taking those light rigs to the 3 kings take lots of jigs...you will need them,if the kingfish dont reef you the sharks will get the fish,or if your lucky 60 kgs of bass will end the pain real quick

Great advice of2fsh, most skippers that take party's to the 3 kings hate "light" sets of jigging gear.
Just like taking a pea shooter to a gun fight, gunna end in tears and not good for the fish either towing around all that braid etc
Bit different if are a super experienced jigger and you and skipper are on the same wave length.
Im back there in April and smallest rated rod i will take is a 333 Grey Ghost, largest a MCWorks 538xxh (elephant gun)LOL

My 1st trips were with a 300 kojak ,learnt some valiable lesons along the way,as great as that rod is it looked very average at times, last year i took a daiwa spin set and enjoyed that.i reckon for your 1st trip up there you want to start off with a elephant gun then move down as you get your eye in.some of the fish on the middlesex were so harassed by sharks they fought very hard,a smallish fish gave a very good fight and had you thinking 30 kgs then up popped a 18kg fish..

He Guys,
Any boding using the CD NANO 250-400 for jigging/live bait looking at budget heavey rod for the 3 kings.
One Spin on a Stella 14000
One overhead on a Accurate BX500N (currently on a killwell 250 Talon)
One Spin on a Fin Nor 9500.
What other option have people used?

Kings only will bottom drop a 50W.

Cheers

most of what you named will be undergunned except the 9500 with PE8.
Unless you have about 300m of PE6-8, you might be struggling.

I can recommend the Jig Star Ninja Spin MH around $500 for the 9500.  You won't buy better at any price.  Stella 14000 will match Jig Star Ninja Spin ML.

I think BX500N will take 300m PE5 - while considered light, might be OK so long as you tell Lance it is 100lb!  Match this reel to Jig Star Ninja ML around $450.

These rods represent probably the best bang for bucks.  3 Kings is a very special place and will punish weak inadequate tackle.   You are spending big bucks for a life-time experience, don't skimp on the very gear you hope to land that monster on.

Ninja Spin MH -

Can some explain why PE6 would be inadequate - surely this line is not going to break? Even under immense drag pressure (if I could imagine holding onto 18kg or 20kg of drag) there's still a big buffer between this and breaking point?

Honest question as I'm heading to the kings next week and will be jigging with a Dogfight and a Saltiga 40Z - both spooled with PE6.

Have a Stella and Twinpower 10000SW for topwater, both spooled with PE6 also

Both trips i have done to the 3 Kings, the heaviest line i have used is 100lb tasline(abs of 139lb) but all jigging gear has been using pe6 Daiwa saltiga boat braid(abs 94lbs) and never got dusted once but got close a few times.
As long as you are confident in fishing pe6 to the max, it would be ok but naturally, pe8 is better( more margin for error)
Have a great trip guys

In a straight pull you are unlikely to break PE6.  But you will be jigging in the real world where you will have less control of the way you jig, stand, control and fight in big seas with brutal fish.    You will get crossed lines which will cut through braid like a razor, if you survive that, then any unseen heat damage will manifest in an "unexplained" bustoff on what might have been your dream fish.  With lighter and thinner braids, the tolerances are smaller.  A thicker line (PE8) will be more reliable than any super PE6 because of the greater abrasion resistance that comes with thicker line.

Personally, I wouldn't fish with any overhead that isn't a dual drag.  Dogfight, Stella and Twinpower should be OK so long as you understand you are taking a PE6 knife to a gunfight.
Oh and take some spare braid too.

Good luck at the Kings, tell us about it when you return.

Okay thanks for the advice.
I have gone with:
Jig Star twisted sister MH Accurate BX500XN Slammer PE8 @ 250 meters.
Jig Star Ninja MH Stella 14000 PE6 300 meters. Also have PE6 top water rod for setup.
Spare PE6 and PE8 braid.

Chris wong-Personally, I wouldn't fish with any overhead that isn't a dual drag.
Got you Chris...what about an OJ ?Smile  I love my OJ's.
Regarding the braid debate....if any of your braid touches a rock......your ****ed whatever strain it is....but PE 8 or 80 pound has more "Scope" like Chris says.
The 250 metres is cutting it a bit fine.......especially with some of the deeper drops @ the kings.
Will be interesting to hear his feedback.Wink
