hey fellas, I am after info, yes over the years I have caught probably more than my fair share of kings nothing over 30k but here's hoping, anyway I have a question

Bait fish coming close to the surface   ( 0-20m down), over reefs ,  teasing them is a good idea , using birds etc

Land based fishing the usual deepwater / good current ledges, livebaits out, casting out and also along the face of the ledge with the bigger stickbaits on the weed line.

Mark from Extremesportsfishing talked about it on his talks , using lures , birds or even a stickbait , we've often towed one around , moving spots , several people I know have hooked up doing this. I rekon a string of birds or  a couple off each corner of the transom would be good , get the kingis looking up.

From the stick baiting and popper fishing Mike and I have done 10 - 20 metres over drop off reefs foul, and the usual places like bouys and channel markers. Drifting has worked best for us and when "looking" casting both sides of the boat whilst drifting gives you a pretty big look. If the Kingies are there the response is usually instant, with often multiple follows. It really is very visual, energy charged way of fishing. There have been times we have had 20 - 30 king chasing, shouldering each other out of the way. They are usually 8-15kg but we often see much bigger beneath them. The trick I guess is getting to those bigger fish. I have used them off the bricks, that have brought the kingies into the live baits. Best fish I have hooked on popper was last week which was a solitary fish that just smoked me before the hooks pulled.

of the rocks tease them with a popper/stickbait pull away from them a couple times then let it sit or if your cheeky bit of topic throw a rigged pipper once the waters foaming lol

This has given me an idea Mark... Our Kings here in Cape Town are generally a topwater fishery, with jigs being a loooooong way behind... while our kings are nowhere near your sizes, in fact a 10 kilo fish here in the Cape is a trophy, we do get large numbers in the 4 to 6 kilo class, with a few fish pushing 8 or 9 kilos in the mix... while obviously smaller fish, matched to the right gear ( PE 2 and SB gear ) they are a blast, especially as its mostly a sight fishery.... 99% of our fish are caught on smallish plain silver spoons wound fast and straight... the faster the better... but as is typical of our kingies, you'll get 20 casts in with anything from 1 to 10 fish chasing your lure to the boat without hitting, before you get a fish to eat.... we boated 40 odd fish on Saturday past, where if we had hooked even half the fish that chased our spoons, we would have been looking at 150 plus fish... frustrating to say the least!

well the week a head is looking good, so I will head up the coast and see how we go, lots of good areas up here to have a look at and a couple of places I want to cast a lure at for snapper, will give the rod and reel a work out for sure even if it is just casting about
