Spent 10 years of my life going there from Auckers every second weekend... The locals liked us so much they put up a caravan and freezer space for a little bit of koha and goods in exchange,  like bread, milk and 1/2 gals of port wine for rent... 
Walk out to get mussels about a mile down the beach towards the lighthouse, bend down in the water, just over knee high and grab a bunch or two and fire up a storm on the beach with a bit of corrugated iron for a cook up... If we were lucky some of the locals were heading down and we would jump on the back of their utes for the return trip... straight out from the old life boat launching ramp is a rock with heaps of small crayfish... and some nice kings patrol the deep water at the edge... 200 metres or so down the beach in early summer and some nice gurnard can be had...  magic place and some great memories had with a lot of fish caught.. went there with my bus 3 years ago after being away 20 odd years... the magic is still there... 

yup.. we used to stay in there free in the old days... they had an old fridge that gave you an electric shock every time you grabbed the handle... heaps of fleas on the old kapok mattresses but we were fishing..   Then Ole Fred May {house right on the point} said we could use his caravan as long as we didnt smoke inside and made a space in his downstairs freezer for us to fillet our fish, pack and freeze to take home... only the locals would know where the mussel beds were, but we were shown and would walk out about waist high... reach down and grab a clump/feed off the bottom and put into a sack .. only took what we neded for however long we were staying.. heaps of driftwood to make a fire on the beach surrounded by big rocks... then cook them up for a nice feed... few beers to wash em down...  fry up some fish or heat some backed beans mixed in with spaghetti and fried onions... gawd the stuff we ate back then.. burn toast.. and lashings of butter..
Slept many a night in the corner next to the fire on the beach with lines out and ratchets set .. and we would be awake, bolt upright if any sound was heard ...

Use to surfcast alot around there also,some mighty big gurnard there.Used s/bs off the beach just around the corner couple of hundred metres towards lighthouse,got some great trevs too.

haven't seen photos of the place for years thanks    great place to fish nice great memoires 

*Fisher* have stood on that ledge many times and have seen some really big sharks go past the old man used to stand in the water up to his calfs not ME .I fish sand island now and then and look across must now get back even if only for a look .thanks for the pics much enjoyed

I find this place real eery, wild, definetly some strong energy around there. Oh and very very sharky. There was a race a people that lived in the sand dunes around here centuries ago, fare skinned that were possibly some say survivors of a Spaniard ship trying to cross the bar. They eventually intermingled with Local maori and were breed into some of their lines, so the story was told to me.

Yup we set out sat morning, came back sun night.
Unfortunately we weren't too successful 
only caught 3 nice fat gurnards and 2 kahawai, and heaps of undersize snappers using size 5 hooks!
but overall we had an awesome time, felt awesome going back there..
