Spent 10 years of my life going there from Auckers every second weekend... The locals liked us so much they put up a caravan and freezer space for a little bit of koha and goods in exchange,  like bread, milk and 1/2 gals of port wine for rent...
Walk out to get mussels about a mile down the beach towards the lighthouse, bend down in the water, just over knee high and grab a bunch or two and fire up a storm on the beach with a bit of corrugated iron for a cook up... If we were lucky some of the locals were heading down and we would jump on the back of their utes for the return trip... straight out from the old life boat launching ramp is a rock with heaps of small crayfish... and some nice kings patrol the deep water at the edge... 200 metres or so down the beach in early summer and some nice gurnard can be had...  magic place and some great memories had with a lot of fish caught.. went there with my bus 3 years ago after being away 20 odd years... the magic is still there...

yup.. we used to stay in there free in the old days... they had an old fridge that gave you an electric shock every time you grabbed the handle... heaps of fleas on the old kapok mattresses but we were fishing.. Big smile  Then Ole Fred May {house right on the point} said we could use his caravan as long as we didnt smoke inside and made a space in his downstairs freezer for us to fillet our fish, pack and freeze to take home... only the locals would know where the mussel beds were, but we were shown and would walk out about waist high... reach down and grab a clump/feed off the bottom and put into a sack .. only took what we neded for however long we were staying.. heaps of driftwood to make a fire on the beach surrounded by big rocks... then cook them up for a nice feed... few beers to wash em down...  fry up some fish or heat some backed beans mixed in with spaghetti and fried onions... gawd the stuff we ate back then.. burn toast.. and lashings of butter..
Slept many a night in the corner next to the fire on the beach with lines out and ratchets set .. and we would be awake, bolt upright if any sound was heard ...LOL

That's Low tide and you can see in the foreground a spit jutting out which is about 100m along from the beach road entrance...
Fish this spit on the incoming tide and cast back towards the point in the background and you'll be into 50-60 foot of water... If you cast the other way, towards where the photo is being taken from, you will get some nice gurnard over the sand...
Have a good weekend and let us know how you got on...

Really deep off those rocks, great fun with a couple of burley bags there, the ky would swarm around, got cleaned out there a few times, must get back there.
Used a kite out passed the lighthouse got some big snappas but the current was super strong, got the kite powered up as hard as we could but it would still take the lot either in or out depending on tide, noticed over the couple of years going up there that the bay further round (toward light),think they use to call it rosemary bay?,began filling up with sand, guess its just the nature of the whole area with the sand movements, use to be a real dodgy patch near the light, one minute hard then super soft, always interesting that place.

Editted my post to keep it from being thrashed, you may want to do the same

What's the access track like at this time of year? May give the inlaws Patrol a bash, it's been looking forlorn since they moved from up there into the city - doesnt get to see the mud anymore!

I find this place real eery, wild, definetly some strong energy around there. Oh and very very sharky. There was a race a people that lived in the sand dunes around here centuries ago, fare skinned that were possibly some say survivors of a Spaniard ship trying to cross the bar. They eventually intermingled with Local maori and were breed into some of their lines, so the story was told to me.

Agree there Manoa, certinaly wild, with a strong sense to the place, like you are not alone when out in the dunes overnight.

Hi wonderful people, and apologies for resurrecting an old thread.

A colleague recently mentioned Pouto Pt, but I know little about it and with it being a 3 (ish) hour drive was wondering if anyone had more info.

I have 3 young Fisher-learners in tow, so wondering how safe it is with both mother-nature and locals, as the littlies enjoy casting and then running riots.

I do have 4wd, but not overly experienced off roading, so is the beach relatively forgiving?

Lastly it was mentioned to me that there are also dune lakes with fresh water fish, is that true and should you have a rod licence?

Sorry for lots of questions but intrigued to find a new great spot after several years going to Port Waikato.

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Hi all I'd be quite keen on a bit of info about the area too. We are shifting to Matakohe in a month . So are keen on exploring the Kaipara and surrounds by boat and 4wd. I too used to fish the Port and Kariotahi / rivermouth.

I often go to Pouto with my mates for a weekend camping. The key is tyre pressures.

It can get bloody soft. I drop down to 15psi at times and my utes 2.7tonne with me in it and camping gear for myself.

The point itself can get real nasty, there are a few spots with quicksand and with the tidal movements you can lose a vehicle fairly easily if you get stuck.

Its hard work on any vehicle above the high tide line.

Also I believe the only access point now is from glinks gully. Its the way ive always gone
