 my okuma got full service and switched to left hand wind about 3 months ago but has been running pretty tight so opened it up for a look.  full of crusty grime build up and corosion that took a lot of wire brushing to get off - i doubt it got opened up when it got serviced - prob just did the handle switch.

Its still not quite 100% and i have 1 spare screw left.....took everything apart which wasnt too bad but putting it all back together today was more of a challenge. couldnt get the oval shaped gear off as bearing was seized onto housing.
 
Is this crud build up usual? Anyone had much experiance ripping these reels to bits?

I am no Okumka expert, but if that is 3 months worth of 'crud' you must have been giving that reel a pretty wet time. One screw left is a bit of an issue. I would find where that sucker goes if I was you. Did you grease all the mating siurfaces when you reassembled the housings? You certainly seem to have an issue with water ingress.

if you like, put it all in a box and send it to me. i have serviced several of these particular reels. there was a slight issue from factory regarding particular metals used with these, and these have since been rectified. i'll pm you my address, give the reel the "once over" and get it back to you asapThumbs%20Up

I have one & have pulled it to bits numerous times.
Mine is mostly used landbased ( occasional boat) but has never looked like that.
Is yours used for yak fishing?
The oval shaped gear ( transmission gear) is a buggar of a thing to get sorted if you ever do manage to release it.
Have you had a look at the Okuma site  for the schematics to help locate the left over screw?

Find out where the screw goes, they all have a purpose. I'm fair and square with Tagit there, it looks like it has been dunked some time ago.

That sucks Bush! After all the upside downs I do, my softbait spinning reel doesnt look like that when it gets the monthly open up. I would send it to a pro asap.

thanks for that mr brown and other comments.  i will send north, complete with the spare screw! yep i do use  it on the yak and has had a few waves over it in last 18 months but have used a dry bag for last 6 and thought it would be looking good after the last "service".  i reckon if even 1 tooth out on lining up the gears it wouldnt run as smooth as its meant too - and my rough eye had trouble lining up a small triangle down through a little hole.

same shock I had when I opened my VS80 which I serviced first time about a month ago...



heaps of corrosion and factory grease thickened like dough. Used it solely landbased and it never got submersed only occasional saltwater splashes. Quite dissapointed as its only a year old compared to my older shimano baitrunners which was totally mint inside. Used almost a tube of reel grease and heaps of CRC on it. Not gonna buy Okumara reels soon until I hear some good news Thumbs%20Down.

Anyone know what those holes circled in red are for? Would they have been major areas responsible for water ingress?
Looking at a pictures of the external body, it looks like those holes and the whole bottom seam of the real are covered in such a way that once water gets in, it can't easily seep out:

yes well spotted sooshee. i think they are for easy access to grease the gears but seem to work best at letting water slosh around in reel.  the reels are very nice to fish with and have pulled in a heap of fish with my one.  I think once i get this one up to scratch with mr brown i will keep it well tucked away in dry bag when in danger of too much of a splashing and get the side casing off more regularly.

That doesnt look good, good spotting Clarence, maybe a bit of thick grease or glue LOL in those holes may help somewhat.

After looking at those pics I decided to give mine a birthday.
In dire need of some oil & a bit of grease but apart from that, not a skerrick of rust or salt build-up.
This reel would be 3 years old & has done a bit so I'm more than happy with it.
( re-assembling , I managed to cross thread the rotor nut--buggar--now have to figure how to sort thatConfused)

This thread has reminded me that my Symetre could do with an open up and my Redback is sounding a bit sick so will do that as well.

Anyone know if tacklesharpe or anyone has reel grease and oil available online?

if anyone interested found some reel grease online at discountfishingsupplies.co.nz
seems ok, some sort of teflon grease. guess I'll see when it arrives how good it is

I'm looking at purchasing a Okuma Salina 30 baitrunner, have heard they have a great drag in them but this thread is making me think twice. Would've thought they'd be more robust then this....
