I bought a Okuma 40 baitrunner the other day from smart marine. Opened the reel up and it looks mint inside everything has been well lubed greased etc well impressed. Hmmm I sent them an email re a warranty request about 2-3 months ago. Heard nothing and then a couple of weeks I ago I received an email catalogue (spam) from them so they obvioiusly received my email. Sent an email back in response and again heard nothing...... Ouch

Yeah, had some good service from them as well.  If you do your own service an average marine-spec grease is fine for inside the reel and a damn sight cheaper than the muck you get in the tubes at the tackleshop.  $5 per cartridge 650gms vs $5 per 15gm tube.  Brush a fine layer over everything in the gear and frame department and Bob's you Auntie...

Marine grease is NOT good for drags though.

a bit of a delayed update for the guys that were following this topic, i sent bush's reel back to CD the Okuma agents here and they replacedthe parts under warranty no questions asked and received it back in a speedy manner. This is a true testiment of how great these guys are to deal with and their back up service is second to noneClap

hi everyone,i cant believe that any of these reels just end up like this after normal use, i have two okuma reels plus various other brands and they all get regular use an never look like these ones do. i admit i do make sure that if any of my reels get any saltwater in them ,i strip them and give them a rinse in freshwater then leave to dry, after that i regrease,oil then put away for the next fishing trip.all of these reels look like they have been dunked in the ocean then just left to rot.come on everybody we all know how harsh the marine eviroment is on anything metal.once we all realise this im sure most of these issues would not arise.
 
if anyone is interseted i have found that this product seems to be working really well at stopping this type of corrosion http://www.corrosionx.com/.
 
also would be very interested to hear where you got your reel serviced ?

Gota keep em dry boys, I service hundreds of reels every season some of which in worse condition than that. One thing to remember is that nothing is kayak proof!!.
Bush, If you had that "Serviced" three months back and you havnt thrased the crap out of it, then I would be taking it back mate, Send a PM if you want a proper job done!!

There is a difference between the Okuma VS and the Okuma VS 'a' series. From what I understand the VS 'a's have had their components updated to counter the corrosion problems that the VS's had. There are still alot of VS reels on the shelf - so take care if you are buying a VS reel.
 
I have bought a 55 VSa - and teamed it with a braid concept rod. I have gone from not liking Okuma gear (at all after several failiers) to being very happy with it in a very short time.
 
The only complaint with the reel is the grub screw that attaches the handle is not up to the job.

seems ok, some sort of teflon grease. guess I'll see when it arrives how good it is
