Have people successfully fished for marlin and/or tuna with poppers and stickbaits in NZ?

Not yet, but there is a few people that will be specifically targeting them (marlin that is) this coming season.  BA is one of them.

Trolled a big stick bait last season, with big single hooks, off the shotgun. Did not get bit, but the nomad guys have had success apparently so thought I would try again iof summer ever comes.

Last year we had 4 seperate fish come in on the stickbaits whilst chasing kingfish. With a bit more focus and emphasis on top wtaer ir will happen for sure this year.
It has been done in plenty of other places aorund the world.
Will be a whole lot of fun

seen it done on a popper attached to a Torium 30....but I guess the Wanganellas don't count....stopped the boat right on top of a meatball getting demo'd hard, Matt cast the popper only 30-40ms and with in seconds there was a herd of the baskets on it....was an angry bite and even managed to get braid tangled around a second marlins pec fin during the fight.....at one stage there was 2 fired up stripies doing the haka simultaneously.....great days!!

big singles, trebles and billfish is silly and dangerous. You have to get a really good hookset straight away otherwise the fish can and will throw the popper when it bites. Got to go to work, will write little more later

so no one has any ideas what to use or try out, seems like experimenting will be on the cards, hooks will be the saving grace as I think the shot is there just need to set that hook.

step 1: find something like this

step 2: cast a smaller stickbait into the madness. Something like a baby runboh, tailwalk gunz, mangrove studio volador..... anything that vaguely represents what the fish are feeding.

step 3: hold on and dont be a pussy on the winding

got it twice like that on the golden bank bank and once on the gordo, we managed an average of 15 stripeys per day. 1 of those was on a popper, 3 on lures and the rest on baits
