Looking at over seas websites has really opended my eyes to what can be done when you have a go yourself.So while I was talking with my factory manager I spied some wood we had used last year to build out door furniture...got me thinking...so I pinched a bit....drew an outline about the size I wanted the bait to be and basic shape..and then got whittling ...with a pair of sissors..LOL

 
Was really just making it up as I went,looking pretty crude.
 
 
 
Did a little bit of real work and then at knock off time went and shaped it further with a belt sander,just used my eye to git rid of any shoulders,and shape as I saw fit,rolling it over the belt.
 
 
Looking a little less rough and starting to take shape,at this stage I still wasnt sure what hardware I needed or how to go about assembling it.
 
 
Some finer sand paper and more elbow grease to improve the shape further,develope into what I am not quite sure..Drilled the belly hole and holes from each end to take wire.
 
 
Me being me I couldnt wait for the next day so this poor piece of wood got painted all sorts of colours before being re sanded and painted from scratch again.
Quick call into TOPCATCH for some sticky holo tape and I was ready to start adding some bling.
 
 
 
First wings were nice but I struggled to get the eyes nice and even.
 
 
Added a red dot for an eye,not really made for anything,but hey I just wanted to see what it would look like.
Ended up throwing some wire through it as I am impatient.Not really as sharp as I would like and still need to clarify a few things,BUT it will do for my first and will catch a fish I'm sure.
Rigged here with Barbless 5/0's
The belly swivel is a little low and I am unsure how to stop the wire from turning?
The tail also has some lead in it so the nose will hopefully point to the sky when at rest.
It still needs a clear coat....Ended up adding more mettalic mauve/pink over the back and over the silver to give it a nice squiddy hue Wink
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Cant wait to get it sorted and start turning out some quality baits to use on our local Kigfish population.

Wicked bro, I can see a few being tempted to DIY em just for the shear money savings. I would think it'd be that extra thrill when you catch on your own models!

Hi Edan,
Its still a bit of a work in progress (incomplete) but I would say I could do one with hand tools ready for paint in about two hours..this one took several days,after work etc cause I kept tinkering and to be honset was pretty lost.
 
Thanks Aaron, I might have to get some pointers off you about paint.

Josh if you have tools like a jig saw to get basic shape its only a matter of running it over a belt sander to shape it,then drill the holes not long at all an hour?

cool thats not to bad, will have access to lathe and plenty of tools once I'm living back up north in november.
notice those gammas were very light for their size and made out of balsa?? been having a bit of browse trying to source chunks large enough to carve a stick bait out of but no luck yet can only find sheets.

falco do you have any pictures of the hardware prior to assembly.  you could also get exotic wood (heavier or lighter in weight from Moxoms (sp) at the mount)
 
nice work you could router or use a rotory tool some lines in it for detail too

Ha ha yeah I should point out the pile of wood offcuts was owned by me from outdoor furniture we made for our summer BBQ's...as long as the boys ask before taking first there are no issues.
