stick baits are designated floating or sinking, each provides a  different action.  
Poppers can also be weighted in differing parts of the lure to provide different actions. Just skittering across the surface is one of many ways to use them.

I assume a popper should float, so it skips along on top of the water. But, I thought a stick bait should sink? so it runs just below the surface.  If this is correct, shouldn't a stick bait be made odf something that sinks, not wood?
 
To make a lure of wood - if you start with dowel (in big diameter), can get it shaped quickly with a rasp.

Nice work bro. I can't justify spending the money on some of those exxxxy priced models, but what you've carved out there, well that's just inspirational.

Have you got a link for how you do the wire?

Not casting a such have thrown it in a barrel and it floats head up nicely rigged with hooks.Will give it a on the water test this weekend hopefully...quite eager to see it swim,or die at the hands of a fish..which by all accounts is on the cards with the reports Im hearing loacally of stick bait
success.
It weighs about 120g bare.

Falco nice work, I like the holo tape looks great and it is not that easy to apply on the curves so well done. Don't worry if the wire spins, once you apply epoxy it should stop that. Once you get addicted ( and you will ) and start making diving baits that is when the wire needs to be tight so you can tune the lure. How much weight did you end up with in the tail? Once you get a few more under your belt would you be keen to trade some lures? Same applys to any other DIY lure builders out there.
