hi can anybody tell me what sort of rod or money i have to buy or spend to get a good set and does anybody remember the polarised glases with the leather on the sides if so can you still buy them thanks

is land based different from surf casting?  Im just new on this thing and I would like to find out if theres a difference..

Surf casting normally needs sinkers, for distance, some to hold in the sand to stop bait drifting in with the current. There are some good books on the mysteries of "reading the water" on surf beaches etc. I'm useless at it. 

Save a fortune when rock fishing, leave the sinkers off. I must have lost 1/2 a tonne of lead and terminal tackle for africa until I wised up that the sinkers caused most of my snags. Fish your feet first, you often don't need much distance. Watch boat fishermen cast to the rocks, then wonder why some rock fishermen cast to the open sea? Structure and food = fish.

You were asking about reels in another thread, I've been enjoying a bait runner lately. Entry level units like Silstar around $100 - $120. Not certain that mine would handle a really big fish, but for the few times a year I fish like that, cannot bring myself to part with serious coin.  What ever you buy, you'll want more, bigger, better until tackle buying becomes an addiction.

Im would try to go out this weekend to try to get some fish.  Just need to buya decent reel.  I just bought a 14" rod, would that mean I cant use it fishing off rocks? or it is only best for surfcasting? 

14 footer should be okay, Nsane. If you're fishing an area with a submerged rock or a lot of weed just out front, a longer rod may help you clear these obstacles on the retrieve. I use a 13 footer and a 10 footer most often. Longer rod may also help you to keep a big fish's head up and keep it from getting into the weed and rocks and busting you off.

If I'm going somewhere where there a plenty of deep dop offs I'd also take along something around 7 feet and berley like crazy to bring the fish in close.

As far as polarised glasses go, I've just got a pair of the Dirty Dogs. I like the wrap around style which help prevent light and glare getting in from the top, bottom and sides.

thanks...  I would be going to a fish and tackle shop tommorow to buy a 12" rod.. all of my officemates reckons a 12" is easier to handle than a 14"..

check out the k-mart flyers as well. they sell okuma, even penn, and often have 20% off sales. Sometimes they throw a bunch of fishing gear in a bin and discount it as well.
