| hi can anybody tell me what sort of rod or money i have to buy or spend to get a good set and does anybody remember the polarised glases with the leather on the sides if so can you still buy them thanks |

Get a rod/reel for $200 and you can catch some decent fish Dont know about the glasses, but I got some from the petrol station for $20 that work just fine

Same thing. You might find you need a longer rod to cast further if your fishing of a beach. but if your fishing from the rocks you might not need to cast so far so you can use a shorter rod. I fished a ledge in the weekend that dropped down to 15 meters right in front of me. It was like fishing off a boat. Heaps of current, but no kingys.

nsane, Surf casting normally needs sinkers, for distance, some to hold in the sand to stop bait drifting in with the current. There are some good books on the mysteries of "reading the water" on surf beaches etc. I'm useless at it. Save a fortune when rock fishing, leave the sinkers off. I must have lost 1/2 a tonne of lead and terminal tackle for africa until I wised up that the sinkers caused most of my snags. Fish your feet first, you often don't need much distance. Watch boat fishermen cast to the rocks, then wonder why some rock fishermen cast to the open sea? Structure and food = fish. You were asking about reels in another thread, I've been enjoying a bait runner lately. Entry level units like Silstar around $100 - $120. Not certain that mine would handle a really big fish, but for the few times a year I fish like that, cannot bring myself to part with serious coin. What ever you buy, you'll want more, bigger, better until tackle buying becomes an addiction. Good luck, F.T. |

Nsane - Surfcasting and Rock fishing are quite different. I would say that if you are serious about either form of fishing you need to set up as differently as if you were comparing surf casting with boat fishing. The first time you hook into a good kingy of the rocks you will gain a better understanding of the difference. A good rule to apply when getting rods and reels is to buy the best you can at the time. Big fish test even the best gear at times. Avoid P.F.D. (post fishing depression) |

thanks for the replies.. Im would try to go out this weekend to try to get some fish. Just need to buya decent reel. I just bought a 14" rod, would that mean I cant use it fishing off rocks? or it is only best for surfcasting? |

Nsane you will struggle to use it on some rock fishing spots as you have to try and manage getting tackle and bait on and keep your reel out of the water etc. It is simply a space issue. However it can be done but you will soon be out looking for a shorter rod if you do a lot of rock fishing. |

14 footer should be okay, Nsane. If you're fishing an area with a submerged rock or a lot of weed just out front, a longer rod may help you clear these obstacles on the retrieve. I use a 13 footer and a 10 footer most often. Longer rod may also help you to keep a big fish's head up and keep it from getting into the weed and rocks and busting you off. If I'm going somewhere where there a plenty of deep dop offs I'd also take along something around 7 feet and berley like crazy to bring the fish in close. As far as polarised glasses go, I've just got a pair of the Dirty Dogs. I like the wrap around style which help prevent light and glare getting in from the top, bottom and sides. ------------- Keep knockin', nobody's home. |

thanks... I would be going to a fish and tackle shop tommorow to buy a 12" rod.. all of my officemates reckons a 12" is easier to handle than a 14"..

check out the k-mart flyers as well. they sell okuma, even penn, and often have 20% off sales. Sometimes they throw a bunch of fishing gear in a bin and discount it as well. ------------- . |

ok rod length is more a personal/environmental choice. According to everyone and their critic, including the guy at norcross I should not be using my favourite surfcaster. Apparentlu someone 5ft tall should not be fishing with a 250gm 16 footer. Well eat my farts, I wonder why I can cast over sandbar every muggins has to wade out to cast over. Seriously its what you can handle safely and comfortably. |

| casting round 100-120 std with 3oz sinker and because I have kids el cheapo surfcasters are a better bet...its a butterworth coastal, as the tip gets broken and a bit shorter the better it is rock fishing for moki. Its a medium fast action rod and very very easy to load, no swinging just load casting. Remember guys your body is a spring, stand face on, turn at the hips and cast through the shoulder. Most of all be absolutely balanced otherwise you could end up on your butt. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than going to a surfcasting comp, getting comments on casting distance and have someone else say but she looked a bit off today. The looks are priceless. I dont do casting competitions unless I am dragged kicking and screaming and I have won a couple of trophies for distance and accuracy with flyfishing. This has paid an integral part in improving my ditance with a surfcaster, I learnt to load a rod properly and be able to feel when the rod is ready |

DAMN, thought I posted hours ago. The latest one sportsworld in Johnsonville, its predessesor from Norcross in Henderson. Damned good allrounder and reasonably cheap enough to put through anything and not worry too much about it. Now for the new flyfishing rod I am after. The OH is finally figured it out that the $350 rod I have on layby is very cheap for what it is. |
