Hi, Im 14 and just started getting into fly fishing.  I live in wainuiomata and am keen to try and fish the wainui river.  Does anyone have any tips on spots and what techniques to try?  Im am using a 6wt 9ft rod and have a floating line so can nymph and dry fly.  I also have a weight forward leader to imitate a sinking line.

 

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Mike
Welcome to the forum & the "brotherhood" of flyfishers, always great
to hear of a youngster keen to become involved.
 
Forum members here will be only too pleased to offer advice, however
unless they are familiar with the Wainui, any advice is more likely to be
general rather than specific to that particular river.
 
Have you thought of contacting the Wellington Flyfishers Club ?
 
You could get a contact details from any Wellington sportsfishing shop.
Am sure there would be many very experienced members that would be
keen to pass on their knowledge, pertinent to the area. I may be wrong
but I think they also have a program within their club, that focuses on
advising & assisting younger anglers

PS when you mention a weight forward leader, presume you are referring
to a weighted braid leader. If so, may not be all that suitable as they can
sometimes be a bit of a "pig" to cast & IMO there are far better ways of
getting a fly down towards the bottom.

I fished the Wainui on Monday night with the guys from Hunting and Fishing in Lower Hutt. Pic above is a guy Steve who is a customer of H&F with one of the fish we caught.

I caught a couple of nice fish one on a soft hackle wee wet, the other on a CDC dry. Both were around change of light. There were a stack of fish around and well worth the effort.

Next time, I would definately swing a small ie size 10-8 black wooly bugger.

Hi Michael

I don't think it was private property. I'm from Auckland so really didn't know where I was. If you pop into the Hunting and Fishing store some time and talk to either John or Pete then they will tell you where to go.

Great to have such a productive stream so close to home though, I'm jealous. Beats Auckland!!!

Best of luck, you know we are all expecting you to keep us posted on how you get on. We will be fishing vicariously through you!

Hi Michael
My name is Tane Webb I also live in wainuiomata and am 13.
So have you fished the river much yet, do you know any good spots.
I have a 6wt 8 foot 6 rod with Canadian floating line on it.
My friend says he went fishing recently and he caught nothing
but could see the fish rising. Do you have any recommendations for what time of day
to go.

Yep, I well remember the good old days in the early 80's, biking from Tokoroa to out past Putaruru on the 10spd ShockedShocked to fish the Waihou and Waimakariri streams - good times SmileSmile
Sorry boys, cant help with any thing on the rivers down that way, but as mentioned above the local fishing shops and Flyfishing club will get you on the right track.
I will give you one good piece of advice though - stay away from women Wink they have destroyed many a young lads fishing career CryCry

i just wanted to say that i have contacted the wellington fly fishing club and i am going to join it. they have a wainuiomata river fishing day on this saturday i will let you's know how i get on. it should be good to go with people that know what they are doing. Smile

You'll have a great time Michael, there are some knowledgable anglers in that club. If you see Strato or Gordon Baker tell them Clark said hello.

Hunting and Fishing in Cuba street has access maps for the Wainui.
Most of the land is private, but there are some public access points, like at the bridge as you come out of town.
I've not fished it much, and also went out with Wellington Fly Fishers on my first visit. Steve was the guy who took my group out. I managed to get 2 good fish.
 
The land that Steve takes his groups to is private and you wouldn't get back on it without Steve accompanying you.
 
I try and go as soon as there is a gap in the weather, so PM me your number, I wouldn't mind if you joined me.

Fished the Wainui today and got my first trout on a flyrod!  It was only a baby but a trout none the less. I caught it on a little nymph under a dry.
 
 
 
Hoping for some a bit bigger in the future!

Could not be happier for you young fella !!!!
 
The size of the fish does not really matter, as we old coots can
guarantee you will remember that first fish on a flyrod forever,
no matter how many years fishing you have to look forward to
ahead of you.
 
Of greater importance however, is the fact that you are, at a relatively
early age displaying all the key attributes associated with a respected
flyfisher & by that we mean far more than merely being a successful one.
 
Probably the only advice we can give you at this stage young fella, is to
not to be in too much of a hurry, take time to enjoy the "journey" you
are about to embark on, value the mistakes that like all of us, you will
make & hopefully learn from along the way. However above all, try hard
to maintain the overall sense of perspective that you have obviously been
gifted with.
 
All the best for the future Mike, would be proud to go fishing with you
anytime, providing you did not mind being burdened by a "Old Fart" &
you do not land too many more fish than me!
