G'day lads.
 
Heard about this crazy new jigging fad thing and decided its time to give it a go - so booked myself onto Damo's trip in March.
 
Damo kindly suggested I could hire some of his gear, but I'm really keen to use something I have.
 
Have a 10-15kg jellytip jig-spin, but alas no reel to match.
Just bought a Kilwell Live Fibre 10-15kg overhead (mainly to go with my TLD for a bit of livebaiting). The million dollar question - can I use my Penn Senator 9/0 filled with 80lb braid? I'm guessing the retrieve rate should be ok due to the spool size. Its me old kitefishing reel. Probably quite tiring but I used to haul in 2 kites being pulled in a 20kt wind with perhaps a 4ft shark and 4-5 snaps attached for 40mins - giving the old guns a good workout.
 
Only other thing I have suitable is a TLD15 - could spool with either some 50lb I have lying around or take off some 80lb from the penn.
 
Or am I just wasting me time?

Hi there Garrick - welcome to the forum,

Frankly you would be detracting considerably from the fun of jigging on light but powerful specialized jigging gear. It would be very hard work as well. Bite the bullet mate and hire Damo's gear.

As you know we just ran a clinic trip.
 
I guess you can jig with whatever you have available to use, hopefully on the trip Damo is running there will be guys on there with some purpose built gear. If you get the chance use it and the difference is huge. There are guys on here much more able to advise about the gear than I, but from the trip we were on I fished with a Stella 20000 and T Curve which is a great reel but the rod just makes it harder work than the shorter jigging rods.
 
Go hard with whatever you have or can hire, but keep your eyes open and start saving for your new jigging set upThumbs%20Up

Garrick, you can use what you have BUT it won't work well and you won't enjoy it!  Take Chopsticks advice &  buy it or hire Damos gear (don't exactly know what he uses apart from JM rod).  Modern jigging is a totally different animal to that of the 1970 - 80's where maybe your gear was readily used.  We are generally getting our results through the proper gear and technique.

dude get some gear! Senator will be well uncool, your arms will be farked after only about 10mins, big heavy slug
I'd use the TLD15 with 50lb braid over the Senator. use thumbs (gloved) for extra drag Wink
 
good excuse for a TAS session, jigging is hell fun

Good jigging tackle is specialised, why not give it a crack with what youve got and see if you like it, which i know you will.  then spend some cash and get some really good stuff. I know myself i have tried to get away with spending less on lesser gear only to find out it does not last, then i have had to go out and spend the money on the better gear, this has meant in the long run i have had to spend a whole lot more cash.

hey garrick what day u booked in march mate im on the 21 or 22nd trip , tld 15Confused nah not on damos boat , i use my tld 15 last time i was out with him and no shi# i was so close to being spooled had to snap it off, and besides wat a excuse to get new gear i just got a nice hi speed shimano reel with a jigwrex rod to battel sum green torpedo,s
