I agree with Espresso on the advantages of overheads. Also wish to add there there is less issues with birdsnests during mechanical jigging (when you don't get the technique right).

Pros and cons for both.

After seeing a stella hooked to a blue marlin recently i think they are hard to beat. and that is hard to admit after i have given certain stella users a bit of a hard time lately. Also of note the JM terminater rod handled the job extremely well.

Youve changed drew....i just went a brought a tiagra30 lrs and put it on a calstar kingi rod with a leather grip and 1 off single foot fuji silicoln guides in preperation for your assalt on the white island kingies and here you are on the jigging forum fraternizing with the metal slinging jiggers...no christmas cards this year...

If you're a southpaw you're limited in the choice of overhead reels. You can't be a sissy and rest your spinner on the rails though. Then again, as mentioned, you don't have to handle the braid with a spinner. It's interesting to note that the Japanese gurus tend to like spinners but the Taiwanese guns prefer overheads. I think this is due in part to the different depths they both tend to fish in; with the Taiwanese jigging in much deeper water.

I am a newbie to the jigging game. I have spent many years heavin sinkers into the tide for the beach so the idea of a egg beater made sence to me. Having just been through the jigging clinic it seemed that the over heads got to the bottom marginly faster, but that could have been the style and weight of jig. Drag pressure is a topic of some debate with the crank the drag up and the gentle as she goes method ( to a degree ) both having good arguements. The general drag setting was about 8 kgs for a start, as the recommended at the clinic. If you are thinking in dollars and cents you can get a combo Stella and T Curve for about $1250.00 or you can get a over head and top class rod from the likes of Jigging Master for slightly less.

Yes go the Stella. Hangs below the rod nice. No line lay to bother with, wicked drag, good capacity, IDEAL RATIO and can be left hand retrieve. However, you are limited to the amount of leader the spool can hold/or thickness as it springs off the spool when you open the bail. 130/150lb 1.2mm 5 meter leader being good. On a overhead you could go up to 300lb like Jimi?  Also, the Stella is 924 grams. This is slightly heavier than most overheads I think.. But is of no concern IMHO. Just my 2 cents.
