What are the pro's n cons of the two reel options?. . . over head/fixed spool
I have had a quick gander through past pages and can't seem to find anything existing pertaining to my question.
So opinionate/advise away gent's

Fixed spools are for unco aussies and seppos
Overhead all the way. apart from more drag out of the spinning reels I dont see any advantage to them

I must concur with the Mozz...overhead all the way for deep jigging you can feel a hit on the way down more easily, and there are some wickedly fast retrieving reels around. Of course you'll have a fixed spool onboard for the surface retrieving option (popper, piper etc) - so umm, I guess you need both

I agree with Espresso on the advantages of overheads. Also wish to add there there is less issues with birdsnests during mechanical jigging (when you don't get the technique right).
IMHO, the advantages of spinning reels also include being able to cast easily into workups, and no need to use thumb for line laying, although the latter is not really a factor when jigging in shallow water with overheads.
Yeah we need both types of reel$$$

I see you lot have been brain washed! Spin all the way! They cost a fraction more so I imagine that rules my friends above out. lol One more thought for the day Japs use Spin reels! They do how ever make OH Jigging reels for the rest of the Euro Uneducated Jiggers!

Pros and cons for both.
After seeing a stella hooked to a blue marlin recently i think they are hard to beat. and that is hard to admit after i have given certain stella users a bit of a hard time lately. Also of note the JM terminater rod handled the job extremely well.

Try before you buy KeenAs, then buy a Stella
Try and get a trip or two in if you can and try both types of combos, not a cheap pastime for guessing wrong, mind you one outfit is never enough anyway

For those OH Jiggers there is one undeniable truth in favour fixed
spools. The sound they make when losing line, it is
cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're a southpaw you're limited in the choice of overhead reels. You can't be a sissy and rest your spinner on the rails though. Then again, as mentioned, you don't have to handle the braid with a spinner. It's interesting to note that the Japanese gurus tend to like spinners but the Taiwanese guns prefer overheads. I think this is due in part to the different depths they both tend to fish in; with the Taiwanese jigging in much deeper water.
------------- CONFIDENCE: The feeling you have before fully understanding the situation.

I am a newbie to the jigging game. I have spent many years heavin sinkers into the tide for the beach so the idea of a egg beater made sence to me. Having just been through the jigging clinic it seemed that the over heads got to the bottom marginly faster, but that could have been the style and weight of jig. Drag pressure is a topic of some debate with the crank the drag up and the gentle as she goes method ( to a degree ) both having good arguements. The general drag setting was about 8 kgs for a start, as the recommended at the clinic. If you are thinking in dollars and cents you can get a combo Stella and T Curve for about $1250.00 or you can get a over head and top class rod from the likes of Jigging Master for slightly less.
At the end of the day go for what suits you, there are more than enough sheep in this world. As a newbie MHO is worth squat as there are many more qualified exponents in this form of fishing.
Good luck
Murf

Us spinners have got to stand up and be counted, after using both for 3 or so years i cant go past the stella more drag than you no what to do with, ease of jigging as you don't have to hold the reel upright, it just hangs there.I think in the end it's just what suits you as a individual.

Yes go the Stella. Hangs below the rod nice. No line lay to bother with, wicked drag, good capacity, IDEAL RATIO and can be left hand retrieve. However, you are limited to the amount of leader the spool can hold/or thickness as it springs off the spool when you open the bail. 130/150lb 1.2mm 5 meter leader being good. On a overhead you could go up to 300lb like Jimi? Also, the Stella is 924 grams. This is slightly heavier than most overheads I think.. But is of no concern IMHO. Just my 2 cents.

STELLA STELLA STELLA I'm so passionate about this reel if one asked me to jump of a cliff i would.Must mention when fighting a fish it is a lot easier when your front hand is not trying to lift the rod up but to pull the rod up as if you were hanging on monkey bars doing chin ups. That sound's a bit weird but i no what i meen.i think

Totally understand what your saying. .. which is of interest to me. i broke my neck some years ago and lost the use of my left arm for 5 months and it's never been the same since. certainly not as strong as it once was.. . .

stabi, I was doing the same thing before the clinic...short leader because it tumbles off the spool. After some education!!!!!!!!!i now use a 15 meter leader. Solution to the over spooling issue.....................cut some braid off...........well I got rid of the nylon behind the braid. I still have over 300 meters of 80lb braid on spool and I am using 200lb leader that starts life at 15 meters. Not had an issue since, and if I get into a fish that spools me with all the drag I can apply and 300m or braid then good luck to that fish..

On the drop? Using the Stella 20, the line just stops comming off the spool and you know, (you have to keep your eye on it), then flip over the crisp, super engineered bail arm. When the bail is open, an automatic brake is apllied to the rotor which keeps it from turning uneccessarily. I've heard the jig drops quicker using a spinner as there is no moving drum revoloving to let the line out. My jigs get hammered on the reef!

Yeah Murf, that helps heaps-not having too much braid on the spool and to leave some room for the leader! I agree. Good advice.

With the overhead, you can thumb the spool to vary the speed of the drop. You can't do that on the spinner. IMHO, slider style jigs can be made to drop faster by thumbing the spool to make the jig drop in a more vertical manner.

Hey Jim Its OK to be wrong! (I tell my wife this also. ) Flip bail let braid slip losely between fingers , no problem feeling pick up, but lets be honest that happens once in 100 drops. Both types have there pros & cons. P.S. I Like the text joke, but not as funny as the Wheelie Bin SS
