Just wondering what the set up for long jigs I heard the other day about using a second hook and attaching both the top and bottom hook to the body of the jig with rubber bands is that the go? I guess it is to help hook up on the fall?

I dont reckon its a good idea myself, not to say i havnt tried it every now and then...

 - Double the terminal tackle cost
 - more than twice as likely to snag on the bottom
 - way harder on the fish when hes got 1 hook in the mouth and another in the eyeball.
 - waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more dangerous for the angler.

I never bother with rubber bands, dont need em, and they make every thing look mickey mouse.

Any time I have had a kinfish bump on the way down, let a couple more meters go, click the reel in gear, and youll hook him or one of his mates 95% of the time anyway.

When first trialing an assist at the top and an assist at the bottom I got a stroppy wee kingie to the surace pretty quick, hoofed him in the boat and as he was thrashing around I became 'handcuffed' to the kingfish via the jig/second assist, and the second hook went through the crutch of my jeans, another inch and it would have made for an interesting size 35 Gammy scrotum piercing LOL lucky they were old fishing jeans, and a bit big eh...

It's amazing what a single free-swinging assist hook can hook up.  I've hooked a couple of kahawai on their backs, a 10cm wrasse from the bottom to the top of the jaw, and a rays bream through one side of the jaw to the other. Haven't hooked one in the scrotum though LOL.

The Japanese who invented this style of jigging don't use rubber bands.  Neither do I.  I never had problems hooking up on the fall butyou will have far more hits on the lift than the fall.
A free swinging hook has found to be better all-round than a fixed banded one.  A second hook on the bottom can be used but might also snag easier and tangle with the leader when mechanical jigging.  A second hook also presents a danger to the poor guy trying to subdue a thrashing kingie in order to unhook it.  Plus other reasons outlined by Benk and Sooshee.

While we are on this topic, what do you think is the best length of assist hook in proportion to the jig body? I have mine 1/3 to 1/2 the body length of the jig. Interested to know general preferences. Thanks.

Mine are 1/3 or less sooshee, as long as it is no longer than 1/3 im not fussy. Kingies have pretty big gobs.

Yeah that is about right.  I had to make and extra long assist when rigging up my 60cm long Dancing Magic jig.

I concur with the one hook method. Love those long jigs with kingies smashing them. On deep drops I tend to halt the drop with my thumb periodically - giving the jig a jerking action (Shimano Torsa lever drag). On surface cast and retrieves, I like using my Baitrunner 6500. Tried rubber bands - didn't seem to increase strikes  or catches, so I don't bother. And as I hardly ever keep Kingfish these days - one hook easier/better to release.

80lb mono short trace with 24 or 37kg braid for the deep stuff, Baitrunner has 10 or 15kg mono for surface jig retrieval - very exciting style of hookups Smile

You will definatly get more hookups on the drop if you do use a rubber band!

Yep, we actually jig with that!  Proof of the pudding - 3 Kings @ Princess Group.  About a 25kg King in real tiger country.  I didn't want to lose my $350 jig.  Measured my drag later and it was set to 15kg.

It wasn't easy jigging this 1.2kg jig.  A simple yoyo was all I could do, at least it was shallow water BUT shallow = cut-off, so had to crank up drag a bit more.

All going well I am heading out toward Karewa this weekend long jigs and s plastics.

A wee question on my reel (stella) I set it to 20lbs drag, with scales, is there any issue leaving it compressed while not fishing or would I be better off backing it off when it is at home waiting for next trip out fishing.
