Anyone ever fished for trout here or elsewhere in the ruahines? I hunt there occasionally and have always wondered whether it's worth bringing a rod too.

May pay to check the regs. I know the Pourangaki is closed until 1 October.

I've fished the Pourangaki from the Kawhatau confluence and it's a lovely bit of water. Not big fish but the scenery is superb. Well worth a walk with a rod.

Please excuse m ignorance but where exactly is the Pourangaki river ?

If it is somewhere in the Wairarapapa I will most likely be in that region just after opening day in Oct.

It runs into the Kawhatau Bazza which in turn runs into the Rangitikei just above Mangaweka.

Am I correct in understanding that by the kawhatau confluence you mean after the pourangaki and kawhatau meet? Has anyone any idea of whether there are fish in the hills? Ie near pourangaki hut or downriver of there?

Where the Pourangaki and Kawhatau meet. The Taoroa Junction topo map is the one to refer to.
