Tie straight to the eye of bait or split ring and swivel??

Thoughts??

Carpenters prefer tied straight to lure but i use a swivel/split ring 90% of the time...plenty of ways......some people use crimps............the split ring/swivel is good for ease of changing lure....sure others will have their say.
Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens.

I lost a couple of lures (with fish attached!) when tying straight to the lure, the wire on the lure straight through my knot. Now I use a split ring to a jigstar grommet

Try and find out.....If anything it gives them more freedom to move but if they are too heavy they can weigh down on the line and cause trouble....so match them to lure size/leader weight.......I have used this combo for a long time now for most of my stickbaits
NT size 1 swivel with a 9mm decoy split ring(dull grey)= nice match........NT size 2 with 10mm decoy for big stick baits.
      The split rings are excellent and recoil well and the swivels are just bloody good......get yourself some decent split ring pliers too...."Kaveman" on here sells some good ones(i have a pair and they are great).Wink

Picked up a few of these from Top Catch the other day.. I'm no expert with rigging stick baits either, so first rig I used was straight to the nose with braid using a uni knot and the lure ring slowly cut through the braid so I tried a split ring/swivel and braid to swivel and it just started doing barrel rolls instead of doing sweeps like it did when it was tied straight to lure with no swivel, but I can't do that as it cuts through the braid. Any suggestions?

You need to use a shock leader.

Depending on line weight, and what you're doing, about a rod length of 100lb or 130lb mono tied to the braid with a FG knot, and then to the lure with a uni knot.

It's my light stick bait set, I'm using PE2.5 braid that breaks at somewhere around 60 or 70lb. This particular lure nose ring is not a rounded smooth, instead its been cut straight so there is for edges in total the line can rub against. Are you thinking the thicker mono will not get worn down and cut through?

Possibly like the new nomad lures, the through 'wire' is actually a CNC machined piece, and has quite a square profile. 

I would never tie with braid anywhere near the lure/jig as any teeth/rocks will cut you off, so always use a leader. 

But I'd probably suggest using Jigstar knot sleeves over your mono, if tying straight to the lure.

Have to use leader mate. Even if it's a light setup use Min 80lb mono leader

Just got some 200lb fisherman split rings and  two packs size 1 owner swivels. Confident it will do the  trick

I'm still trialling both (leader straight to lure and split/solid) but would a rapala knot be stronger and provide more lurer movement that a uni? Definitely need good splits/solids but perhaps hook quality is equalling, if not more, important.

SOM (Studio Ocean Mark) Ocean Snaps tied onto the end of leader - swap out lures in seconds with no split ring pliers etc...

60lb BM supple for most of it, or 80lb if in harsh area

SOM Ocean Snaps ( Studio Ocean Mark)

Been using them for the past year and highly recommend them.

Size 4 or 5 for inshore and 6 and 8 for Offshore .
It's also really easy to change your lure as you don't require a set of split ring pliers.

x2 for som snaps, used them for a few years in size 6 which is recommended for kingies, they released a ball bearing swivel version not too long ago which i bought a few packs of, but have yet to try them.

owner split rings. NT swivels if you can get hold of them and trace depends on your budget theres so very good traces out there but you pay for them. I just use sufix zippy in 80 or 100lb (with pe5 or 6) you could use a 40 or 60 with your PE2.5 though. Its nice supple line and casts really well!
