Hmm..
 
How many of you use O/Head reels for topwater?
Been looking for a rod and it seems that those available are biased toward fixed spool reels.
 
Might just be my google failing but if not, why would Fixed spool be better than O/Head in this application>?

You might need to try something like an Australian site, get a barramundi casting rod, I have never tried overhead for casting lures, but if you can get the distance I can't see any major issues, generally spin reels are used as easier to cast and no overspooling.

I use a Toro 60 on a OH stick bait rod that I built myself. It works very well on harbour kings.
I have mucked around with stick baits on my OH saltist and sl30/sl40s, biggest problems are lack of speed of retrieve and in between sweeps you end up winding on slack line. Sooner or later the loose line on the spool causes trouble with the cast.

Will look at the Aussie forums . Have been looking at the UK forums but they mainly seem to focus on smaller lure weights than I need.
 
Ignoring Ratio and focussing on inches per turn, what is a minimum in your opinion for success?

Look for Muskie rods in the states, they are normally overhead and plenty are designed for big top water work with decent length and lure ratings.
 
Barra rods will work but most OH ones are really short and designed for fishing around cover

Isn't this sort of work that the shimmy tranx was brought out for, maybe worth a look.

i remember seeing matt watson chucking poppers in the islands with a torium 30, not sure on the rod but this would do the job:

The Tranx HG looks the biz. figured it would be a shade on the small size for line length and drag if going for OS kings. Don't have that problem here :-)
 
The NACL would suit as would the TranX for round here (Wellie)
 
Have registered at GTPoppin will check it out when the admins approve
 
That snake head rod is sick btw..

The more I look at the tranx the less I see to impress me. Aside from the DBL dog ar backup I can't see justification for the price. Obviously this is paper based and not from exp. The big komodo looks slightly smaller but has ss gearing compared to the small toothed tranx and similar line cap and drag. Anyway. ...... For less than OS kings is a 15/24 cap rod necessary for shore use or could a 10/15 suffice ? T-curve in B&S and TM got promise?

It doesn't seem possible to get a TranX HG in NZ. I see the PG around a few places online..... Is the demand on the HG model too low in NZ?

Bumping this coz I slipped , tripped and got a TranX PG -ex demo off TM for not a bad price
I guess the title should be what OH rod can I get now.
 
Research shows the musky rod solution isn't a good option.
Barra rods of suitable length in 2 piece are far and few between.
The snakehead at gofish is a little short as I will be shore based and would prefer 8-9 foot
MC works and or Ripple fisher is out of my price range to be frank.
 
So make, bodge or buy is my dilemma?
Buy is fastest but options are limited.
Bodge is me cutting down a 13 foot 2 piece sonik sk3 butt and reguiding the top half or using the sk4 top half (its compatible) to aim at around a 9 foot rod ( realistically this has about a 5% chance of happening for many reasons)
Make is a steep learning curve and might be a step too far for me as my current abilities/experience limited to re-guiding only.
 
Have seen a 9 foot 2 piece Ecooda expedition rod
Has Fuji guides and rated to throw 100-250 g lures. I assume this to be an optimistic estimate but if it handles 150 OK I am sweet
2.59 mtrs. weighs 290g. rated to 26kg line.
 
Not much info online on this rod but the ecooda range gets some reasonable feedback from aussies. both for rods and reels. Is a Chinese manufacturer. can land one for under 200 dollars nzd
 
Guess I wont get much positive feedback from the purists here Wink but got to put the question out there just in case.
What are the chances of this being a good solution?

The shimano 15-24kg bluewater 7'6" T-curve wouldn't be far off a workable rod....
A king on the bricks is worth 5 in a boat.

I got one earlier this year. Had a cast while on the come down from the flu and wasn't impressed.
At that stage I figured it would be a better livebait option than the jellytip I use
 
Took it out last nite to see what the tranx felt like on it and was impressed.
Was casting a 75g busted lure I got from Action Tackle and liked the feel
 
I have a batch of sticks drying and will have a better test in a week or so when they are ready
 
Still feels a tad on the short side but that may just be me getting used to it.
