hi guys. yep another fg knot thread. i'm having trouble with the fg gripping the leader. when doing the final pull up it always seems to pull apart a little in the half hitch half. when i do get it nice and tight and test it to breaking although the braid snaps away from the knot it pulls apart in the half hitch half and some hitches have even slipped off the end. have tried on both black magic tough and supple trace. any advice would be appreciated.

I had a simlar problem when I started tiring them.when I test them. They would always slip.and often break at the braid.
I try by tying 2-3 half hitches then pull braid and mono to tightn it up followed by 2-3 more and so on including when half hitching the mono and braid.as for the braid snapping I can only put it down to maybe burning it when I trimmed the end .
This is just what worked for me.give it a go and see how you get on

Have you tried tying them like this? If not give it a go and that should solve your problem.

+1 Grunta!

I am hopeless at learning knots. But even I can tie an FG as shown in the video & it only took a couple of goes to learn it.

That is a great way to tie the FG as in Grunta post, make sure that you "bed down"the knot after a few half hitches and dont try to tie a "long" knot either,(makes for a weaker knot)

Bit different than the one nathan aka b.a.f does but essentially same i guess, a lot more half hitches and no rizutto finish?

Can someone tell me how many twists they do when tying the fg to 120lb leader and also 20lb (soft baiting) leader?

Cheers.

I do about 20 for everything but when I was up in Tonga a couple of years ago Kurt from 'Poppin Tonga' did half a dozen and said he'd never had one fail so pick a number in that range depending on how brave you are and how well you can tie them I guess. It's a great knot.

I've always done 16 (thats what I used to do with my yucatan knots) but had one break for the first time at the knot yesterday resulting in a lost fish and stick bait. I had read to many turns make a weaker knot and was thinking maybe my 16 twists is a bit excessive.

6-8

make sure that your first half hitch is very, very tight, sets the knot up nicely

That video looks a very cluttered way of doing it.
