After a bit a advice please, I'm looking to get one of the new Saragosa's for my stickbait rod and wondering whether to go for the 10k or 20k.
Rod is a Tenryu Spike Tuna, specs are PE 4-8, max drag 15kg. I'll prob run 80lb Jerry Brown on it.
The reported max drag on the 10k is 15kg so wondering if that would be a better fit, and lighter reel as well.
Opinions/advice appreciated, chur.

I've got a 20k which will be used for jigging/livies/deep drops/sharks. It's quite heavy, and gear ratio more suited to jigging. I'm pretty sure 10k has a higher ratio, and is significantly smaller and lighter, so in your case I would go 10k. Brilliant reels though!

20K way too big to cast all day, 10K a much better idea, if it's high ratio even better. 60lb JB hollow is more than enough (actual breaking strength 84lb from memory).

Look into the ah 8k mate. Retrieval is alot better than the 10k. Me good mate has a 10k and is a very nice peice of kit and highly recommend this however i find it to slow on the days where the drift is a tad faster as alot more line to wind in at only 1 meter per crank.

The 10k is 4.9:1 @ 102cm per crank 15kg
The 6k is 5.7:1 @ 103cm per crank 10kg
The 8k is 5.6:1 @ 108cm per crank 12kg

I know its bugger all but these things do make the world of difference is some circumstances.

I am not sure however if the 8k is available. I am sure one of the SHIMANO gang from NZ can clarify

Im Assuming Aaron, your referring to the older model Saragossa?
The new 2013 model the 8000 is not being run here at the moment (specs are to similar to the 10000)

here is a link below to our web page with all the info

My personal preference would be the 10000 for casting all day! I prefer slower retrieve for stick baits.
How ever some would disagree and prefer a faster retrieve. each to there own!

Weight is a problem with all the reels if you are trying to get best combo of the drag weight, line capacity and reel weight unless you go to the new CI4 material.

Not sure they have the Saragossa out in it yet, I have brought in the new version of the Big bait runner Long cast in CI4 and it is amazingly light (20kg of drag 300m 15kg mono) use the Spheros 14000B at the moment for stick baits which seems to be ok but is heavy.

All the new  10k to 25 k Saragosas to slow for top water fishing. I am runing a 10 k at the moment with 60lb JB hallow. It just just fast enough for popper fishing. I am not into stick baiting but it look like you need more than 4.9 gear ratio for stick baiting. Not sure why Shimano ever drop the Twin Power as it a brilliant reel, much better than the current Saragosas.

I am  curious Saffayakker as to why stick baiting needs a faster retrieve than popper fishing?

Also isnt the amount of line retrieved  more significant as opposed to the gear ratio?

I am not into stick baiting but it look like you need more than 4.9 gear ratio for stick baiting. Did you read that? What i found is that  a faster retrieve gaining line much faster than a slow retrieve and i do like less winding. A 5.7 gear ratio with 122cm line gain  is much better and easier on the person that 4.9 and 102cm line gain. But each person differs and that is my opinion only.

I did read that……. Cheers for the response.

I was of the understanding that a lot of highly regarded fishermen will use the same reel when throwing stickbaits or poppers, granted they are typically

Personally speaking I get hits on stickbaits and poppers using the same reel.

Both poppers and stickbaits can be used with a wide array of retrieve styles, not necessary limited by the speed of the reel.

But as you note, differnt strokes for different folks

I've got the 10k with 60lb jb it holds around 270m, the other week when I was at White Island we all had a bit of a stickbait with it next to a 2008 stella 10k. It cast just as good and didn't have much trouble stick baiting with the saragosa, I will say that when the wind got up and we were really moving with the drift it was a bit easier with the stella having that bit faster retrieve. All and all everyone was happy with the saragosa mainly coz of the price and it going to do the job just as good, if you r looking at just landbase fishing I wouldn't go past the Saragossa.

Some good sound points there. So I'll let you all into my dilemma, I've got a $500 voucher to use at a tackle store, and I'm looking to upgrade my topwater setup, currently running the above rod with a Stradic 8000. Will be looking to get a new rod in the next 12 months or so.
Do I,
A) buy a Saragosa 10k which I'd pay nothing for
Or
B) pay $900 for a Stella 14k with a view to an upgraded rod in future

Will have a video up tomorrow showing the Saragosa10k and Stella14k fishing side-by-side....both catching plenty in both flat and windy conditions......the Saragosa is a lot of bang for your buck but if the buget allows then you know what you must do...:)

Put the 10 000SW through a good test yesterday. We caught 10 GT's in about 2 hours time. Six to me and 4 to my mate.  Start to like it more even with the slower gear ratio. Just have to wind a bit faster.LOL See photo's. Nothing big but up to about 30lb. Good fun. All fish have gone to needy people on the island.

Nice saffayakker,

By the looks of it I am guessing that your Tarawara GT's are ciguatera free? What about the big ones?

Cheers

HI stonefish,

I own a stella 18k and a saragosa 18k, not quite the sizes you are considering but similar concepts relate. Saragosa is good, stella is better. But as you know the saragosa is about half the price but not half as bad a reel. The stella is about double the price but is it twice as good? Confused yet?

What I guess I am saying is for NZ conditions ie kingfish, I think I would buy two saragosas as better value than one stella, or one saragosa put on a sweet rod is better than a stella on a budget rod.

If you are planning on fishing for GTs in the tropics, whole different set of rules, stella all the way for me.

But either way whatever you buy, stella or saragosa are both good. I have often heard the saragosa referred to positively as "the poor mans stella" i.e it has many similar components and parts to the stella but without the price tag. Shimano crew on here will know all the internal specs, details etc.As has been said saragosa is bang for buck and really good value, stella is nicer though so tough decision.......

just my opinion, many others will have different ideas than me.

Thanks guys, I've given in to my TAS and gone with the Stella 14k. I figured that I'd be likely to be tempted to upgrade a to a Stella in the next couple of years and why not just go for it now.

Now to get a rod to match.....
