Tie the lure direct to the trace with a uni....Loop it around Twice...then tie knot....it swims better.
All other lures i use a NT swivel and split ring but not carpenters.Thumbs Up

I use a jigstar swivel and grommet with the extra ring cut off and a 400lb split ring for All my stickbaits, Carpenters included.
Mainly as it allows me to swap lures fast with ease. The Grommet makes for a safe secure connection to you trace.

What Boulder said but to add to it as well when travelling we like to take our baits off the rod so these are not bashing around against the rod. Also like the swivels incase line twist happens to come into play.

For best action and how the man himself fishes his lures....(Mr Konishi)

chain knot to owner solid size 5, 250lb split ring then lure

easy to change lure
strong knot
not too much weight on lure
and best action!!!!!!!!

Hey Yeehaa thats interesting in regards to the Chain Knot. What is Mr K's reason for this? Does this act as resistance/spring to take up shock?

Direct to lure , through twice then a 4 or 5 turn uni , cut tag leaving about 30mm, this is how I saw Mr K do it.I have also seem him use a swivel and split ring, so whatever gets the hair in your neck to stand up when its swimming.

All of the above is good choices but like stellajigger said what ever works for you!
this is what we have learnt from him and works really well for us so thats what we do

Of late I have been using a big rubber band through 2 hooks of the bottom treble down around the reel handle to safely control my lures while on the boat.
Seems to work well and keeps all the metal bits away from the rod while the rubber band keeps some tension on.

Here's an AG Chain tied by Konishi san, killing the action was the intention in this approach; too wild and the leader is continually getting hooked.
 
The AG Chain is a Fluorocarbon knot, so I don't understand using it on mono leaders? And when mentioned to one of Konishi's lure testers he mentioned never seeing Kenji using the chain...
 
Uni knot or Jansik, something where you can double loop the leader first as SJ mentioned... Bait's with a lot of movement will chew through a connection with a single loop. Tying direct has it's advantages but when you form the loop in the wire you can mark the inside or outside of the loop with the tool used creating rough spots...
 
For the Bluefish, Uni knot looped through twice and seated nice to a NT 1/0 Power Swivel with a #10 Hyperwire making the connection to the lure. The Bluefish has a lot more volume than say the BC-y so will carry the swivel connection fine and still swim well.
 
Trying different connections and formulating your own conclusions is the best method.

Thats what i use all the time.......just a 9mm sometimes.
I remember going to a stickbait night at yeeha a long time ago and they poo poed using a swivel and split ring saying it weighed down the line and more likely to catch on itself........whats the diff with using a solid ring compared to a small NT 1/0 swivel in weight?
I have seen arron fish carpenters of all sizes with his carpenter rod and stella 18000 and he ties direct and he gets them to swim really nice(esp the jack mac one)..Mind you he is a self confessed addicted casterLOL.That boy can cast all day long and be on another planet!!!!!...using a nt 1/0 and split ring I dont get mine to swim as well......probably my poo technique but i get other lures to swim really well....like the oceas/starwalkers/Cb one zeros and another lure i choose not to mention.
I guess just experiment pete......Go down to the beach on a flat day and have a practise with casting and working your baits and see what works for you...Esp with that rod you have(you dont know how it will work your carpenters)....you never know you might get smashed LOL.
I noticed the rod tip was quite stiff on arrons Carpenter blue chaser(which goes against theory)....maybe that was having a big influence....I dont know.......My tip was softer and i was casting the blue fish 120 gram...Let us know which way you go peteWink

Yeah will do Jon. Actually gonna have a practise run next weekend out of Whangamata so gonna play around with different connections & probably compare Sustain v Stella on new Ocea stick bait rod.
Will certainly report back mate. Oh by the way my mate has totally committed to far north trip despite recent bad news.

When you say you can't swim them as well, is this using his set up with the swivel connection? Or your own setup... You did touch on each rod working lures differently.
 
When you tie directly to the lure the response is better, the first initial dip under the water is not affected or slowed by the extra links in the connection.

nice one samLOL....I was joking....Im not that bad....Carpenters are renowned for being tricky to swim..Needing good technique...It was probably my rod not being suited mate.
The action definitely didnt snake very well.....If i had to describe it.Wink
I can fish all my other lures ok but that rod was not a dedicated stickbait rod.....thats for sure.
I think i tried  it with my synit topshot lalandi too.....and not so good with swivel/split ring...aaron would remember.
I will try it again soon! but to be honest i prefer other lures......Yours being one of themWink
