What do people favour for their vessel or would not use?
I perrsonnelly like wood,if you happen to hit a rock,depending on hole size,easy fix at sea floorboard screws.wooden boats require more maintaince paint etc
fibreglass,easy to wash down ,leave outside,gelcoat starts dulling cut n polish,hole them a bit more to repair not easy at sea?
ali,open to corrosin,french do not paint ali boats apprantly the oxidise protects them better,how do you fix a hole
steel,rusts needs more maintaince,easy fix with a welder
concrete do not go there,heard of a boat that hit a reef in the island when they come back to salvage it,all that was left basicaly chicken wire

trees are made above the ground  everything else comes out below the ground

ever seen 50,80or 100 yr old fiberglass boat or alloy
how would you repair 1 at sea if it got punctured?

Fibreglass and alloy are 'modern' materials - of course youre not going to see a 50-100yo boat.

Alloy, strong relatively light, which transmits into cheaper running costs ie fuel, easy to clean and with modern coatings, corrosion resistance.
Glass boats still nice looking, quieter and ride better in the rough but with rising fuel costs expensive to tow the larger sizes and also require larger motors to drive them.
In the end every one to their own , all have their plusses and minuses, just lucky to be able to own any of them really 
Cant beat hunting and Fishing in N.Z

fiberglass has been around since 1960s,there were a few german boats built but delaminated when they hit the tropics.(yachts)alloy has been around late 60s early 70s

But they weren't common boatbuilding materials then. Fibreglass and alloy boats are common place these days and im sure many will still be around in 50yrs time.

if we are talking about 2013 timber would be on the bottom of the list for construction materials, your asking the question "What do people favour for their vessel or would not use?" yet anyone that doesn't have anything goood to say about timber you attack? im a qualified boatbuilder and i have seen it time and time again with rotten timber boats

thinking about a new boat,what are the pros n cons of modern materials,old boatbuilders will tell you kauri timber widely used was not the best timber but most easliy access.

ply is great for home builders. and if cared for will give you good service for your money. i've seen quite a few alloy boats from the 60's and 70's still being used in the lakes back home. but i think they are babied due to their collector's value. same goes with fibreglass.
 
not many boat builders using wood for new builds these days.

thick plate alloy hull, sealed deck, don't leave hooks or bits of squid in nooks and cranny's. don't see why it wouldn't last twice that. the US navy describes marine alloy as "all but inert in seawater".
 
alloy would be my pick for longevity.

thanks will go to boat show this year and see if i can get some answers,3 shops been to so far like to evade questions on life and what if salt water lays in pontoons as you never remove all even though you think you have,tending towards alloy due to i like fishing in amongst rocks at times,you know when everyone else is charging about the fish like a refuge.

think i would go alloy over others. Back in the day had kauri clinker with thin fibre glass layer over that.Great boat ,very heavy,& dont think you would find similar today ,except websites selling vintage boats.
I have alloy. Alloy can probably take more knocking around than glass.Ie that knock on a concrete ramp when its choppy.
Yes alloy can corrode if neglected. Plenty of fresh water the answer. Things like old hooks ,swivels ,sand ,mud containing heavy metals, old bait  left lying around even ,rainwater with decaying leaves can start up the telltale black spots showing corrosion starting up. But this can be avoided with care

had a look at dna thread,yes alloy seems the go,now is it to be pontoon or not,tagit put in some good points on stability and other members on saftey aspect.interesting experience in your glass boat?

For durability probably glass over alloy. Alloy is not 'inert' in our typical everyday usage and there are lots of stories about corrosion issues. If you do get corrosion the boat can be very expensive (even uneconomic) to repair. Many alloy welds will also eventually start to crack. Glass is truly inert, and a well built solid glass hull will last a long time, as well as being relatively simple to repair. Both however will usually outlast any one or two terms of ownership, although alloy corrosion can happen very quickly in the wrong circumstances. Some older glass boat have suffered from delamination type issues where the hull flexes a lot. Not sure of more modern ones will do the same as they age.
Timber if properly maintained is a permanent material. The trouble is that it needs to stay free of fresh water. If you have a timber boat built from quality materials and well sheathed in glass it can build a very good boat that will last a life time. It can also be lighter than glass, but much quieter and better looking than alloy. Trouble is that it is too expensive building timber production boats and hence we don't see them. The biggest downside of timber is that you must be very careful with any penetrations (screw, bolts, fittings etc) to ensure that water can not weep into the timber. There are standard ways of doing this, and if done up front there should never be a problem. Personally I like timber for the mix of finish and lightness you can achieve, plus the ease of fixing, but it is the build type that requires the most owner care to maintain. Look after a good timber boat and it will outlive you.

With alloy, I don't like its rough stained appearance. Can be improved by painting, but this doesn't appear to last very well, before salt gets underneath. I worry about the hidden places, under the battery, tote tank etc, where I imagine corrosion could get going. I agree with Cirrus, that plenty fresh water, everywhere in nooks and crannies, is important - and I add Saltaway, that appears to help remove salt. In my small 4.1m boat, I would hate fibreglass, because of damage from....the trailer, the boat ramp. the beach, rocks when in shallow, alongside a jetty.
Fibreglass has captured virtually the whole of the larger launch market - which surprises me, as its prone to damage, and the stress this causes (eg when docking), appears to be major. I guess its popular because the flash appearance is paramount with launches. If I could afford a bigger boat (8-10m say), it would be alloy, with a quality paint job.
Wood - I assume is mostly not used much now because its prone to damage, doesn't look as good as fibreglass, and rots more than alloy and fibreglass.
