Basically another similar thread to what I just started in the Walk About forum. I'm completely new to top water fishing but keen to learn and throw some poppers around when I get back home in a couple weeks.

What lengths, weights, colour poppers etc do you use? any ways to avoid wind knots? what length leader etc

5m 130 lb mono (I use varivas cos its good. knots well and cheaper than a lot of others) leader direct connection to braid with FG knot. Good quality casting braid  - I've never had a wind knot with the stuff I'm using, it cost a bit up front but worth the investment.

Only use stick baits now, and only seem to need one carpenter gamma as if there is a kingfish around they just can't resist them. One off investment for 5 or 6 good fish to date and still doing the job.

I don't agree. Check out that guys spool, it is so over loaded. That is why he is getting the cross overs and that's why he would get a wind knot. Sure those will give you wind knots, but easy way to avoid = don't overload your spool with excess line. The septic yank in that video has typically done more talking than thinking and has kind of missed the point.

I do a lot of casting poppers from the bricks for GTs.  What you really need to think about is the elevation where you will be casting from.  Poppers that work well from a boat at sea level may not work so well from elevation.  They tend to skip like a pencil popper most of the way in.   I have a couple of sinking poppers that I use from higher locations as they will stay in the water longer  as the lure approaches shore.  I also have some floaters that I was ready to throw in the rubbish that turned out to work really well up high.  So if you find a popper that you have to keep the tip really high to make it pop effectively, try it from a high location, you may be pleasantly surprised.
