hi all, i did originally post in the general thread,

im heading over to Tonga for a week or so early next month and im gonna take some of my fishing gear, can anybody give me abit of info? i enjoy throwing poppers from landbased and abit of bait fishing, is there many spots in Tonga that could produce some good fish?

i will be working most of the day and that is why i havent looked at a charter option, would prefer a few evening hours off the rocks.

Thanks

Still plenty of rocks and coral around Nukulofa. Try out Ha'atafu out that way drive to the end of road, walk out to the point. But plenty of accessible coastline to go wet a popper. I had a few casts out there but wasn't really set up for it, I will be when I return. Just give it heaps bro.

I have many guests that come with rod tubes and none have complained of any problems.  I went down and back to NZ with a rod and did not pay any fees last year.  Not sure if that has changed with the new fair structure on ANZ.  I live in Vava'u and know many places to fish from the bricks.  It has been a few years since I drove around Tongatapu.  Might want to try the coast around the blowholes.  Just make sure it is not too rough.  That whole coast all the way up to Ha'atafu as fish i said should work.  Make sure the gear is not too lite, or you'll come home with empty spoolsOuch  Good luck and have fun.

might have to upgrade the reel i think, i dont think my boca will cope with a fish the size of a GT , i currently have 15kg mono, what line weight would you recommend? braid?

sorry one other question whats it like fishing with bait rather than lures

If you keep the stuff lite, there is the chance of Bluefin Trevally,  but they pull really hard for their size.  I would not go lighter than 15kg braid on a softbait rig with small poppers.  It would be better if it was 24kg just for the stopping power.  Bluefin Trevally can live in really shallow water and are masters at turning around shallow bommies.

My wife fishes a lot with bait.  Mainly the belly of other fish.  You will not find any bait shops in Tonga.  The locals use the hermit crabs to catch their first fish.  She catches Snapper, Barred Perch, Barracuda, Trevally and other reefies.
