If you keep the stuff lite, there is the chance of Bluefin Trevally,  but they pull really hard for their size.  I would not go lighter than 15kg braid on a softbait rig with small poppers.  It would be better if it was 24kg just for the stopping power.  Bluefin Trevally can live in really shallow water and are masters at turning around shallow bommies.  

My wife fishes a lot with bait.  Mainly the belly of other fish.  You will not find any bait shops in Tonga.  The locals use the hermit crabs to catch their first fish.  She catches Snapper, Barred Perch, Barracuda, Trevally and other reefies.

might have to upgrade the reel i think, i dont think my boca will cope with a fish the size of a GT , i currently have 15kg mono, what line weight would you recommend? braid?

sorry one other question whats it like fishing with bait rather than lures

How to you find getting rods over there on the plane? i have a shipping bag from when i came over from the uk and protects them pretty well but not sure if i have to pay extra to put them on the plane

Still plenty of rocks and coral around Nukulofa. Try out Ha'atafu out that way drive to the end of road, walk out to the point. But plenty of accessible coastline to go wet a popper. I had a few casts out there but wasn't really set up for it, I will be when I return. Just give it heaps bro.
