Hello to all you fishy people in this great country of ours. I've had enough of my Vista craft cabin boat (16ft) and I have started to strip her down and go to centre console. I like the idea of the "more room" issue i have at the moment. Question is: "Am I doing the right thing?" Your replies would be much appreciated.

Mate, i'd give my right arm to have a CC - to me, they're the dream. So long as i have somewhere to keep required items dry. I have no need for shelter, other than a bimini top for some shade in summer....
 
To have all of that working space would be mean!!!

CC =  + More room for more anglers or fighting fish; good for casting - Get wet
Cabin = + Dry - Less angling platform
There will be days were you wish you went one over the other, just decide what you are out in most, what sort of fishing you do most and what is going to make and you and your crew happy the most

Let's face it, most of the time we only go out in decent weather where a CC would be just fine. The extra room would be awesome... perhaps leave a small cabin-ette at the bow as a dodger and to keep dry stuff in.... but I have often thought how much I wish I had a CC here.
Be very keen to see progress pics as well, could be a great project!

+1 for cc way more room and they normally ride better due to weight distribution

Yes, I must admit, now that the cabin is off, I've probably lost a fair bit of weight off the front. I will definitely have to compensate. Especially when all of the totes and the dual batteries are at the back with a 90hp Evinrude as well.

Sounds like a cool project! I love CC boats, I would only go cabin on something big, like 7m plus.

Just make sure the cabin wasn't part of the structure for the hull. You may need to lift the floor and add some stringers or something.

I've got a 5m Marco CC. Great boat. Heaps more room for fishing, casting in different directions than my mates cabin boat of similar size.

 I guess you just gotta look at how often you are planning to go out in really crap weather. I generally don't but its easy to bring an extra jacket for if it rains.

When making the CC make sure its solid and attached really well because that's what you and your passengers will be hanging onto when you hit some rough stuff. Sounds like you're doing the right thing.
I love catching fish. But fishing isn't always about catching.

Depends where you live, I live in Welli and have a Quintrex CC, I love fishing from it over the Christmas holidays out of Whakatane :)  and the occasional 5-10kt variable day we get down here. Otherwise I go out with mates with cabins. Horses for courses...

I have a 4.7 CC after having a number of different boat configurations in the past (6m cabin boat, 4.3 cuddy, 4m RIB), and the CC offers the most room with only a little less protection from the elements. 
For me it is the perfect spearfishing boat. We are already in a wetsuit so the odd bit of wind blown spray really isn't an issue.
I was quite amazed at the amount of storage than can be put into the console when done properly.
The other dive boat I head out in is a 6.5m RIB with a CC - just awesome for the rougher conditions and incredibly dry.

personally Pascoe, I cant think of anything worst for me
Yes Im an old guy but wind burn is harder on me than sunburn and the extra fishing area isnt really needed (for me) when we go out as you can still only use 1 rod properly at a time.
Also, my wife and the grand kids would not enjoy being in the wind and sun allday again because of the burning.
I realise that its too late now and that Im in the minority but just my thoughts

Couldn't agree more Barrie. CC do have a lot of fishing/diving space, but if there wasn't a cabin i highly doubt the majority of people who don't usually fish would come out in the boat. We usually go out when it's calm, but having the cabin allows for that extra bit of wind to pickup, less wind noise so you can listen to music and no wind burn as mentioned. Besides, if we pack our 6m right you can fish 4 people if you really want too, just get's tricky when everyone hooks up (just like a CC).

For me (currently have a 4.2 Sea Spray Cc pontoon) it depends on the size of boat you want and what you do most in that boat.

Where in the country do you live? Im in Auckland, so we get a fair bit of decent weather as well as crap days.
Are you planning on long trips? Overnight? Out wide?
Small boat? Then the Cc will give you a heck of a lot more room, it just needs to be planned out well and have enough storage spaces.
med - large 5.5mt + then id be happy with a cabin, its warmer, drier and more sheltered, and being at that size allows decent fishing space in the rear.

Id agree with others above, at times I do wish I had a cabin (only on the crap days) but most of the time I love having the ability to fish all around.

I have a 5meter ramco and fish 4 adults with ease
Often we fish 2 adults and 3 or 4 kids (young)

Cant strayline more than a couple but for kids, flashers are far easier anyway

Nowdays any wind burns the skin of my lips and nose and it takes a week at least to be able to go out again

I got a Surtees 4.7 CC earlier this year and I'm a real convert.  Had a bimini top on it originally but just in the process of getting a T-top fitted which will open up the fishing room even more.  Downside is that there is a little bit less protection from the wind and spray but dress accordingly and it's all good.

Well, it seems like there are two sides regarding CC or cabin. Well I've done a lot of years with a cabin on this boat with young kids and my wife. I generally did't fish when they were on board anyway, no time to watch rods and kids, so now they are all grown up, I want some space to really chase some bigger fish. I live in Kaiwaka, Northland. So I have choices when the wind is in different quarters. I think due to the fact that I have that ability to choose either the Kaipara Harbour or East or West coast, weather can be out played if you get my drift. As advised, I think a bimini top will help, maybe retractable when motoring???

Don't forget the Bimini acts like a sail and if your anchored up it will catch it. and blow you around a bit more as i have found.

Had 5.2m cabin boat....thought cabins a waste of space....had to crawl through it to work the anchor... never going to sleep down there and all I stick in the cabin is the gear. Current boat 4.7m RIB CC. But as I go out all year round in all weathers I now realised that a cabin with full windscreen keeps the cold wind and spray at bay when under way. Tried using wetsuit in winter to compensate but not pleasant...hands, feet and face still suffer. On the plus side hardly deploy drouge as rib has small profile to the wind......easy handling as much lighter. All the best with the project....too late to stick the cabin back on methinks.
