It's not just the Catalina's but the Saltiga's as well that have a problem... rather than issuing a world wide recall Daiwa are dealing with it on a reel by reel case... the problem according to Alan Hawke is The disc containing the fluid reservoir may come apart messing up the alignment with the magnet sleeve, causing a noticeable heft in winding. Daiwa Japan is overwhelmed by the number of recalled reels and repairs are quite slow, and overseas local centres will deal with it on a reel-to-reel basis instead of issuing a recall.
Daiwa has issued a recall for the new Saltiga and Catalina, and I'd add the Isla to this since it's virtually a Catalina

Mr Plastic, I have the 5k low ratio, use it for Kingi jigging, what a beast, smooth as and just keeps performing, no issues with my handle being hard to turn, love it

Thanks Kevin. Looking at ordering the 4500H but will confirm with Digitaka first that that model is unaffected.

Derek / Mark, I'd be holding off until Daiwa do a press release that the issue has actual been properly rectified.... Local Daiwa agent currently doesn't run the new Catalina so as mentioned in and earlier post you could potentially be importing something that requires going back overseas... I can't see why Daiwa haven't stopped tackle retailers from continuing to sell knowing there's an issue... Still Toyota kept selling the Prius knowing there was an issue and that cost them big $$$$$$ when they finally recalled them...

Kevin, if Allan Hawke's info is correct and I would say it is as he's simply done a direct take on what Daiwa Japan has released is it's not just the Catalina that has the problem but two other models as well. Being the Saltiga and the Isla..
The only actual recall of these reels are the ones sold in Japan by the looks... as for the rest of the world they only intend to fix them on a reel by reel basis if they crap out... I can understand that to a point as the cost would be so massive to do a world wide recall over three models... but it opens up a whole can of worms if your $1700 Saltiga 6500 has a problem outside its warranty period related directly to the issue with the Mag Seal disc containing the fluid reservoir ...

Has anyone experienced this problem with there new model Mag Seal Saltiga ??? and was it resolved? I haven't seen anything from the NZ Daiwa agent alerting to a potential problem...

Just heard from a friend who has returned his brand new never spooled Saltiga 6500 to the NZ Daiwa Agent with this problem....
I see that some tackle shops in the USA are pulling them from the shelves until further notice....

Looking through the overseas forums like 360 Tuna as well as Alan Hawke's site it's clearly acknowledged by Daiwa Japan that there is a problem with 3 models of the Mag Sealed reels..... I'm sure the NZ Daiwa agent would have been made perfectly aware of the recall as well as a course of action for the effected reels sold here...

Graeme, do you know which sizes are affected? Seems to be a lot of confusing info regarding this on the net. I would also have thought that the retailers in Japan would have removed the affected models from their shelves (I hope)....

Copied and pasted from Alan Hawk

Daiwa has issued a recall for the new Saltiga and Catalina, and I'd add the Isla to this since it's virtually a Catalina (CLICK).
UPDATE: The issue is in the mag-seal assembly. The disc containing the fluid reservoir may come apart messing up the alignment with the magnet sleeve, causing a noticeable heft in winding. Daiwa Japan is overwhelmed by the number of recalled reels and repairs are quite slow, and overseas local centres will deal with it on a reel-to-reel basis instead of issuing a recall.
