Ok guys my first dabble into rod building and I need some advice on guide choice...

I have trolled through the section and found some great info but not exactly the info Im after..

Have gone for a CTS ES703 (7' ~ 4-6kg) as my first build and trying to decide what size guides to use..will be paired with a shimano 2500-3000 size reel, using 8-10lb line a 20lb leader..

Have found this on anglers resource..but it looks like a lot of guides (9 + tip) and the second reduction seems quite small compared to everything else I've read on here..



Pics a bit small but it reads KL-H (25,12,5.5), KB 4.5 and 5 x KT 4.5's for a 7' rod

any advice appreciatedThumbs Up

That's basically how I build mine but go for 5's instead of the 4.5's if your running 20lb leader. you will have to drop the KB for a KT as they don't come in 5's.

Once you start putting it together and doing some static load tests you might find you need less or more running guides

Hey cheers for that makka that helps a lot. will probably get a couple extra running guides and maybe different sizes for the second and third reduction so I can play around a bit. 

One more question...if i was to use a slightly heavier leader (25lb-30lb) would 5's be ok or would i need to go up in size again?

I have run 30lb on 5's before, its doable but not ideal. If your planning on running 30lb most of the time I would go up to 6's if your planning on using 30lb, what I have found is:
4's--up to 12lb leader
5's--up to 20lb leader
6's--up to 40lb leader

Start with an 8 tip size and work back from there, why so big, because the last thing you want is your braid to fluor carbon knot snagging in the guides on every cast. You want enough guides to have the line roughly follow the blank curve under load, but use as few guides as possible to maintain that curve for a spin rod.

The easiest way to avoid your leader knot snagging on the guides is to stop using agricultural leader knots and start using the FG knot or similar. Size 8 is way overkill for 30lb leader and a 4-6kg rod
