Pick up our new tub this time next week (me and dad) can’t wait
Till now ive always had tiller steer boats
Im in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy and cant reach behind to drive a tiller

The new boat is a forward Steer so I can drive
Which will be awesome as till now I have relied On family and friends to drive which can be quite hair raseing if they lack the experience needed to navigate the harbour shellows and can’t hear my direction over the 2 stroke outboard

I will have to sit to drive so won’t be able to take the bumps with my knees and Instead will be taking all in the tail bone and lower back which isn’t the best at the best of times

So will be needing to swap the factory Pedestal seat out for one that has suspension /shock Adsorption

Just wondering what’s out there and what people suggest

Cheers in advance
keep up the good work boys

Sapper,
I have used a pedestal suspension unit basic I suppose I would describe it.
It does create benefit for sure, that and a cushion.

But for you I'm not sure. I believe there are many products but budget will be your limitation.
There are some bad arse seats out there. They are pricey.

With this new boat have you done the necessary such as a rsoft ride hull and a rear helm position .
Those components do help.

I think we would all like to know what your new boat is so help can be more practical.

Must be exciting with a new toy on the horizon.

That's what I had,
Definetly smooths out the ride when trolling,
And does provide value on the plane.

Anything is better than nothing.
There are also some pretty clever foams such as closed cell foam in different densities.
Worth consideration.

Why not go for a shockwave s5 system under your helm seat. Pretty clever looking piece of kit. Not exactly cheap at $2200 per unit but I guess it depends on how much you value a comfortable ride. Pedestals are ok, and yes they absorb a bit... but they dont exactly transform ya boat into a magic carpet when punching through the chop.

Yeah mate I know it’s not going to stop the bumps and I don’t need it to
Just need something that helps improve it

Can’t justify $2200 though if it was choppy enough I needed that id probably just go slower to get home if it come up. Unexpectedly Or not go out at all if that was the forecast

Thinking a little outside of the square perhaps some sort of marine bean bag may work. There are a number of designs available or have one made to suit.

Some years ago I was looking at pneumatic style seats for an 8m cat. I never followed through but one of the comments made was that bottoming out was a problem of some of the designs. In fact it was said that as you were in a pneumatic seat this offered you a false sense of security as people had been injured as a result of bottoming out. These comments were made by a volunteer manning a 10m Naiad RIB sea rescue craft and I'm guessing perhaps extreme compared to what use and conditions you have in mind.

Did this for a fathers day present a while back in the 520lazercraft. Was something like 250bucks for the gas pedestal and 300 odd for the big fancy seat.

Found the big fancy seat made a huge difference and the gas pedestal works a treat for my father.

Whenever the new boat turns up that my parents are having built ill be able to confirm or deny whether the big chair is the difference or not as only the small hitech seats fit in the new toy. Will be creating a thread on the new boat when its in our ownership and covering everything on it for the benefit of others in the future.

Good on ya for getting out there mate. Admire that.

Also theres a screw in the gas bit in the lazer that adjusts the weight required to make the pedestal sponge to avoid bottoming out so to speak. So the drivers seat is useless for mum as shes 30kgs lighter than Dad 😂

From reading the scientific research on these I can tell you that if you bottom out on a suspension seat, it will magnify the force, and can even be worse than going without. A lot depends on your weight and the g force involved, vs what the gas ram can handle. They don't last forever either.

Slowing down is always the best solution.

The other thing you can do is ensure that you have good control over boat trim. PTT, Tabs or a permatrim. A few degrees of trim can be the difference between hitting on the vee or the flatter rear sections of the hull.

Edit: I don't mean to imply that you shouldn't get one, just don't think that having one means you can get reckless.
