Did you know...

Sunfish have the greatest growth rate in the entire animal kingdom... They increase in size from birth 60000000 times.

Eating Mullet from the Pacific Islands in June July and August can cause hallucinations. This is the same mullet we have here in NZ Mugil cephalus

Flyingfish can fly at 40mph and to a distance of 200m. (Apparently NZ has three species present)

A whitebait species (Galaxias argenteus) found in NZ can grow up to 600mm.

Pigs are allergic to fish... (explains a certain effect eh!!!)

Giant Kokopu one of the endangered subspecies of galaxias also incredibly easy to spot in a bucket of whitebait as they are more brown in colour.

There is a guy in Raglan who is breeding galaxias of all types, a project well worth supporting.

Did you know that the colonists on the west coast used to write home about going out to the paddocks for fish and chips? Well, as we all know the west coast fiordland area is soggy, there used to be areas where the farmers would plant potatoes and the mudfish would shelter in the roots amongst the dirt. 

Did you also know that until approx 1892 NZ had a grayling species that was unique to NZ. There are photos in Alexander Turnbull showing huge gill nets drying loaded with fish. No one is quite sure what wiped them out but the hypothesis is that the tribes netted them for market and farming did it.

I have read that the introduction of trout also hammereed the grayling.

I dont know we can only speculate but I feel that it was human consumption and development hammered them.

Matt B trout and grayling live side by side in Britain, interesting that you read that somewhere i doubt if that were true. Pike certainly could!

   I read somewhere that the introduction of trout with their predatory feeding habits wiped out the localised population of NZ Graying.

How big were the NZ grayling growing too AC and were they sparse or common? Were they the same species as the british one?

I don't know about maximum size Muppet, from the old Photo's I've seen they look around one Kilo. They are/were native to NZ but did look much like the ones in the South of England. I read they were localised here to a few rivers or maybe a few tributarys of one river, I can't remember exactly.

I think what I read might have been in relation to a Maori claim that they should be exempt from licensing, as the trout fishery depleted and replaced the grayling fishery.  There might have been a timing mismatch thou. like grayling gone before the trout here? 

Anyone know what theya re talking about here?  my memory blurry.

I do know that fish undergo the fast growth spurt of their lives just after they have been caught.

I think you will find that the NZ grayling was a different species to the uk one alltogether.

I know cawthron institute did a big historical write up including photos of thousands drying on racks with proud non pakeha famillies standing in front of them. Am wondering if this is worth a trip down to the archives and Alexander Turnball Library one afternoon.
