Lock down is the only weapon we have against covid-19. There is no vaccine, there is no cure. It is reckless endangerment of many of our lives and our countries prosperity when you break the lock down.

Looks like the mutiny has begun.
Some people are going lock down crazy.
Today ,from a safe distance i heard a lady talking to her dog like he could understand her. I told the cat. He cracked up. We both had a good chuckle .

Ok, so what happens in 2 weeks time when restrictions start to lift and people like me and my wife start going back to work.

The way it will work is that hopefully there are next to no cases.  Slip into level 3, the number transmitted, if any, will be small enough to track, trace and isolate.  

If there are lots of cases we stay in level 4.

How I explain lock down to people who flout the rules is this..
I choose to be part of the 97% who protect the 3% of antisocial folks.
After this is done if it works we are making it possible for the 3% to say to the 97% how they knew it would never amount to anything and it was all a big scam.
What we have to do as members of the 97% (guess percentage) is continue to hold the line as fence sitters stray to the dark side and the percentage of people needing our help increases.
Personally I really don't care if they die to be honest but they are taking advantage of our superior intelligence and ability to apply ourselves to the task and we are stuck with it!

This topic and all the posts just go to show "you'll never keep all the people happy all the time"!!! Of course there will be shops/businesses that may or may not have been able/allowed to open but if the level of cases keeps dropping, then the govt. probably kinda got it right methinks. In a hopefully once-in-a-lifetime event, there is no precedence or rulebook to follow and every govt around the world is making policy on the hoof.
Interestingly the world is waking up to how well we appear to be addressing the situation........I say 'appear' as there's still a long way to go.

Anyhow, on to lighter matters.......does Alert Level 3 mean we will be able to launch a boat??

Look at an actual worse case scenario with a novel virus, or a disease for which there is no existing treatment. Smallpox in North America depopulated that continent by ~90% from 1500-1700. It spread from coast to coast. Black Plague depopulated Europe by half. 

Worse case for a population the size of NZ with Covid19 is about half the population gets sicker than they've ever been, all within the space of a month or two. 2,000,000 cases. Hospitals get absolutely swamped with about 200,000 people needing treatment. Since we do not have the beds, or the ventilators for that many we get in the ball park of 100,000 dead. 

Before things get to that point society shuts down, regardless of what the Govt says. People stay home, everybody knows somebody that has it. So it doesn't quite get that bad. 

Or if you can interupt that spread early enough, and kill that exponential growth before your 1000 cases becomes 2000, 4000, 8000, 16000, 32 000 (doubling every week) then you have a chance of eliminating the virus.

We are not out of this. Most of NZ ~99.9% has not been exposed to the virus and has no immunity to it. The government needs to stay on top of it anyway it can. 

They are doing the right things, but the only real solution is a vaccine. All we can do until then is buy time. 

Schampy nobody is saying stay at home for 18 months, the lockdown is so we don't need to do that. But life will not go back to pre Covid19 normal until we get a vaccine in 2021 or 2022. 

The economy is in the ****ter either way. The lockdown and elimination route is better for the economy than social distancing and mitigation which only changes when you get sick, not if you get sick. 


Fortunately our old exports of food and raw materials are still there for us. Tourism is gone for five years at least, no matter what we do. We are still better off than almost any other nation.

I presume yes, the same way that we could go in boat the last days before lockdown.  probably limit number of people in the boat (2?  4?).  Plus limit number of snapper of course (7 per person max).  Seems like months since I was last out.

The big problem is not only covid 19 patients but those who could be carriers as the disease can be dormant and undetectable.

level 3 will still have in place social distancing.
