Hi guys,

I got a cast net for my birthday, from my younger bro, and was wondering what are the rules and regulations with regards to using them?

Your help will greatly be appreciated.

Last time I checked, the rules for set nets applied to cast nets, so with 25mm mesh only legal for herrings, yellow-eyed mullet, etc. Not legal for kahawai (even little ones) as the mesh is smaller than allowed.

If you don't know the rules (in regards to all fishing) then don't do it.

This is stupid. Asking for "advice" and getting people saying "as far as i know" is ridiculous. Exactly how people end up in trouble.

If you need to know the rules contact the appropriate authorities and simply ask them, I am sure they will let you know all you need to.

Knowing the rules is one thing - how they are interpreted is sometimes quite different. For instance the MPI Recreational fishing rules brochure lists the minimum set net mesh size and the minimum dragnet mesh size for the various species. A casting net is neither a set net nor a dragnet so I would interpret this as meaning there is no minimum mesh size for casting nets. However it is not my interpretation that counts here but how MPI see it - so let us know what they say.

What this does do though, is it shares the knowledge - which can only be a good thing. Many recreational fishers have never bothered to scour the regulations to learn about cast nets because they've never used one. 

It is important though that we do go to the right sources and learn the regs for the types of fishing we undertake. A link to those regs in here would be great.

The problem is there are no clear place to find the rules for some of the less common methods. When I got a cast net several years ago and was looking for the regulations, I happened to find this in the FAQ section of the mfish website (and it's still there, this is a direct copy and paste):Can I use a casting net in New Zealand?

There are no specific restrictions against using casting nets in New Zealand, however there may be closed areas (rähui), marine reserves or mätaitai to consider when setting your net.

The size of the mesh depends on your targeted species. For bait fish such as herrings, pilchards and pipers etc the mesh size is 25mm.

Regulations and mesh sizes for fishing nets are shown in our regulation brochures, which you can access here: Recreational section
A cautious person would work on the largest minimum mesh size for drag or set net for a particular species, and not decide "it doesn't say cast net so there must be no minimum"

I've had a different response from DOC every time I've checked, but they alternate between the set net/drag net rules & don't be a dick with it as they're a bit harder use and won't **** with **** like the things we do have rules for.

There is usually no one else around when I am using mine.

tried them.. they dont do it.. had a bit of research... none in New Zealand..!! There was some rumour about some one in helensville. But no detail that is helpfull.. lol.

same here, what they say is that a cast net is considered as a drag net as its attached to the hand when used..!! lol.

They need to clarify the rule around it.
