Hi. I have a shimano backbone elite popper rod which is 2 piece, joins at the top of the foregrip.I haven't used it yet and when I put it together I haven't got it quite perfectly lined up, but now N can't pull it apart to have another go at it. Part of the problem is the slick surface of the rod makes it hard to grip, I don't want to use the guide to twist the pieces apart in case I break something.

Any ideas? It was fairly tight when I put it together but not unusually so.

I don't mind if it stays as one piece forever as long as it is lined up right, it is only 7'6" which is the same as my softbait rods.

Wrap the join with ice, frozen peas etc. Somthing really cold. Let it sit for 5 minutes. The temperature drop will cause the join to contract, and it should come undone easily.

Most stationers sell a cheap product which goes on the dashboard of a car to sit your cell phone on withit sliding away.

They are great for separating rods as they give you purchase without causing any surface damage.

get two old game lure skirts, wrap one each end of the rod, and get one person to twist one way and you twist the other way, the lure skirts grip like shet on a wall.. and will undo it no problem. :)

Rubber dish gloves will give you enough grip, you may need a mate on the butt end, if that doesn't work try the freezing.

I really do enjoy reading about everyone's individual home remedies, it's nice to see the knowledge passed on to other Fisho's.
Yes I also have that problem with a rod. I think I'll try some peas tonight.Smile

As others have said, rubber gloves etc are great.

Sam Mossman wrote about using a horse grooming mitten for this situation. I had a particularly stubborn T-Curve, and this worked instantly.

To stop it happening again, I ground some lead from a pencil into fine powder and sprinkled this on the male end of the join. I haven't had any more issues getting the bits apart. Other materials like wax from a candle can be a problem, because they form a vacuum seal between the two pieces.

Freezing is a good idea too.

Back in the day of metal connectors on rods I was brought up rubbing the connector on my forehead, around the hairline, before joining. Still do it on my old kilwell 6wt fly rod and never had an issue seperating them.
I do not lie about fishing, I willingly participate in a campaign of misinformation.

Guys - the male section is a plug- the end will more than likely not be sealed- it will soak up mositure and swell if you coat the end of the plug with nail polish hardener or epoxy it will seal it- also the pencil does work - dont use sand paper on the carbon to easy the join, use vasaline and 1000 grit steel wool only or you will end up with flat spots on the plug which creates a weak point in the join -snap -crackle- pop

Another free body grease.

Just before you join it to go fishing rub your finger behind your ear and get that nice sweaty smelly stuff, rub it on one part of the join, done. Everybody sweats at some time or another Confused

Thanks for the tip, it worked a treat, used rubber glove to grip the rod. Cheers!
