Back in the day of metal connectors on rods I was brought up rubbing the connector on my forehead, around the hairline, before joining. Still do it on my old kilwell 6wt fly rod and never had an issue seperating them.

As others have said, rubber gloves etc are great. 

Sam Mossman wrote about using a horse grooming mitten for this situation. I had a particularly stubborn T-Curve, and this worked instantly.



To stop it happening again, I ground some lead from a pencil into fine powder and sprinkled this on the male end of the join. I haven't had any more issues getting the bits apart. Other materials like wax from a candle can be a problem, because they form a vacuum seal between the two pieces.

Freezing is a good idea too.
