I refer to the recent calls from the commercial cray fishing sector here in WA for the introduction of mandatory catch reporting by recreational cray fishers.
Recfishwest (the advocacy group for the recs here in WA) says:
“We often see claims around the need for mandatory reporting of recreational catches coming from the commercial sector, but these claims are completely unsubstantiated. We believe the current method used for estimating recreational catches is grounded in science and more than adequate …
The recreational sector is currently allocated five per cent of the overall catch – around five hundred tonnes, whereas the commercial sector takes 95 per cent or 10,000 tonnes.”
So here we have a 95% comm. / 5% rec. split and the comms infer the recs are taking too much. Sometimes people / bodies, organisations should just stfu rather than look foolish.
