Hi Folks
Im just in the process of insuring my boat...my current insurer is charging an annual premium of $900 with a $250 excess for $70k cover...how does this compare to others? I thought $900 seems a bit steep...

$621/annum with $250 excess for $54000 cover with State. 
You can get cheaper, but I have never had any dramas dealing with State when required (outboard claim on old boat, and car write off from water damage), for me, that ease of use when the sh*t hits the fan counts for a bit.

I'm pay $400 for around $30k cover.  I don't have the exact numbers in front of me.  I'm also with State. 

They have been good to deal with.  They will insure a hull up to 35 years old without survey.  Helpful as mine is 28 years young.

They have been flexible both times I moved storage location, each time checking with the re-insurer and responding quickly.

I'm paying $600 for $66k cover with Club Marine, which was near enough the same as it would have been with Mariner Marine Insurance (who insure my other boat) as I checked on renewal to make sure it was an OK price.  Mariner were very helpful with older boats and when I made a claim were very good.

must be different for yachts?had to get a survey on 35 yr old yacht,luckily I know a surveyor,1 doz and all written out.$1k on $18k
went youi,$600 on $18k,no idea what claims are like though

460 for 50k cover with club marine(trailer boat) with a few discounts for my qualifications and experience. Also probably going to be one of their approved surveyors.Generally boats over a certain age or value will require an insurance acceptance survey.

Obviously moored boats will have higher premium.
Ensure your anti theft device is accepted type to avoid any issues if you have to claim.

There are generally two types of policy as far as I know. Market Value and Agreed Value . I think you'd need to be aware of which you're talking about when comparing.

There are different policies for trailer boats and moored boats, and different rates for the same type of boat in different situations.  e.g. swing mooring or marina berth.  You can only compare like for like.  Some policies, particularly those written for certain brokers, also have special wording which incorporates a lot of add ons.  You really need to decide what you want, including market or agreed value, and then ring around, and read the policy. While State may be favoured by some, there are a number of insurers with specialist marine departments that should have a better idea of which end of a boat is the front.

$200 for $12k trailer boat with AMI
but I will be changing all my insurances away from AMI when I get back it the country
they are your best friend when you are asking for quotes or paying them but a pack of W4NKERS when it comes to claims
had a car stolen so got pinged for 2 excesses (car and contents), they wouldn't cover the full market price they had always quoted me, they cancelled my auto payment and someone else's policy so I got a late bill from them, they didn't de-register the written off car, so NZtransport sent me bill and over due letters multiple times even after I contacted ami that they should sort it out
 
have had a quote from club marine for around $270 for $12k ... but then NZSFC gets a 10-15% of that I believe. and club marines cover is much greater
I just read an article about the dangers of drinking too much; it scared the sh*t out of me, so today I decided I'm never f*cking reading again!

I use Mariner Marine, $891.25 incl gst, insured for $140,000 ($135,000 boat $5000 worth of fishing gear thats normally stored on the boat) with $1000 excess. Have been very good so far, with a payout for a new turbo.

Rule of thumb for launches moored in marinas, used anywhere NZ coastal and inland waters, $1000 excess and an "agreed value" policy, is 0.5% of the value insured, plus gst.

ie $150,000 @0.5%=$750 + GST =$862.50pa

The thing to watch is most insurers will start at this when competing for your business and then try and creep it up above the 0.5% over the next few years, you have to keep them honest.

A 'payout for a new turbo' so you have some sort of mechanical warranty as part of your insurance? I have heard of that also but keen to know more about your mechanical warranty. Do the other insurers cover mechanical? p.s I spoke to AMI and checked my boat is covered when crossing the Manukau Bar, it was and I asked them to put that in writing for me. They also asked me when insuring the boat to break it down into, hull, outboard, trailer which could be messy in the event of a claim as the component costs are unlikely to adequately cover fitted prices. Did you guys with the Club Marine insurance get asked to break down the valuations?

You don't have to ask an insurer to put in writing if something like crossing the Manukau Bar is covered because it is already written in the policy. If they say they cover your boat to, say, 200 miles from the coast, and it is not specifically excluded, then it is covered.   I wonder how many people actually read the full policy, and not just the brief summary that brokers often give.  

Damage to a turbo may not necessarily be due to a mechanical fault. It may be due to other issues such as ingesting water from a leaking hull.  All pleasure hull policies exclude mechanical failure, but it comes down to something called proximate cause.  If the mechanical issue is caused by something else that is insured for, then you should get paid out.
