Why's that? Just the high humidity and salty air?

Yes I guess so. Tough environment. We call it the V factor. But some of it just doesn't make sense.
I got sick of fixing 2 stroke stuff so recently bought a battery Stihl hedge trimmer and a seperate battery weedeater unit.  Everything here costs a lot more - about $1k for NZ retail $600 for the two units. But I figured I had fixed my 2 stroke issues. The hedge trimmer was going fine for about 4 mths then I came back to NZ and 2-3 months later it failed. My mate here had a look and took it in to the 'dealer'. Motor seized. Meantime they lost 1 screw and stripped another thread. I purchased another motor while in NZ - cost about $200 - only 1 in stock in NZ (which suggests they don't expect them to fail). When I got back to Vtu I swapped it over. The dealer here said 6 mth warranty - sorry. The NZ dealer said 3 yr - if I bring the unit in they will replace, free of charge. Obviously I couldn't do that. I pulled the failed motor apart - one lug on the commutator winding had detached itself from the armature.. Clearly manufacture failure. I bonded it back and have as spare now.
I just fitted a new Yamaha F70 to my boat - brilliant motor. The warranty here is 6 mths. I think Aus/NZ is 3-5 yrs.
Electrical stuff near no warranties.
It is just a tough environment I think.
I did contact BM about the rod bucket failure - no response. I guess they rather want pics of gurnard on a 10/0 hook or something.
So my GME boat radio has just failed. About 2 yrs old. The mic cord has completely disintegrated. I sent a pic to GME a few days ago. They have replied tonight. They are offereing a new mic cord at least.  But have no explanation why all the coating on the cord has fallen off.
V factor.

Hi Alan a bit off topic but I see you mentioned the F70. Has it lived up to your   expectations, got the power you require etc.

The cords are prone to UV damage. I always cover my whole dash with a towel when not in use.

So my old GME ws in the boat for about 18 yrs, most of which was in Vtu. The cord is fine. This one has been in 2 yrs and has completely fallen to bits. Anyway, today they sent me a new one (NZ). My friends coming over in a coupole of weeks can bring it (and a pile of other stuff). Once again - if you can't fix stuff, things get awkward. I will fit it myself.

Mate, I cannot tell you how happy I am with this motor. It is brilliant. Perfect for my boat (5.3 Fyran).  I was very concerned about dropping from a 90 2S to a 70 4s. I needen't have worried. I seriously cannot see any loss in power and the fuel econmy is nuts. It has changed my fishing. I have fuel for the day now and can troll whenever needed (45l tank).
Did you reply to my original query about the F70?
Today was windy, just bait fished in close - for a coming Live on Board  trip.
4+ hrs, 10.8 liters.
The closest Fad is about 20k away. I fished it yday for about 7 hrs - 21 liters. Bonkers. I love this motor.
Regards

Thanks for the positive feedback on the yamaha. I really was in two minds, going down to 70 HP.
I think I got a couple of positive replies - yours was one of them then. That was enough for me to make the call. I figured the impressive brochure performance specs would be under the most optimal conditions. I was looking for some real world experience.
So I have the same boat and 90 Merc 2S back in NZ. I am now wondering why I shouldn't change that over too.
I was waiting to see how this motor would go for the hole shot -0 since in NZ I beach launch in to surf. Every second counts when you want full power. But this thing revs out at least as quick as the Merc does. I can't fault it.
