well I do 70% of my snapper fishing with a shimano bait runner 3500b its perfect for staylineing I find it hard to use drum reels for straylineing as I have one good hand the over is average at best.... also 90% of my fishing in the past 5 years has been on the kaipara harbour straylineing in the shallows (on sand) and catching fish from 350mm upto 500mm as a norm with some bigger ones thrown in (my pb for the kaipara is 6.1kg) which I love and will continue to do as much as possible

now my dad has just got back from 5 years over seas he loves fishing the east coast straylineing down a burley with big baits for the bigger fish quite often on rough bottom and it looks like ill be getting dragged out east more offen (I know poor me lol) and in those conditions im not convinced that my little 3500 with 6kg mono is going to have the grunt to keep the monster from getting to ground....

so finally to the question looking for a bigger bait runner or similar reel about 4500-6500 size
I know the shamanos are good im more interested in what you guys/ladys think if the other options as most good brands make bait feeders these days and most are cheaper than the shimano

the penn slamer
the couple of daiwa options
the tica
okuma make a couple aswell
the options and endless

the thing is I dond mind spending the money if its going to buy me the good one but if I can get the same sort quality for less money im always keen
keep up the good work boys

My opinion FWIW ?
Shimano make the best ones (their older series are better than the current ones)
Most of the other makers just try to emulate them and put brighter anodizing on theirs Wink
OKUMA have some incredible drag capacities and I do rate them
I have both ~ but prefer my Shimano
I am sure you will get many other opinions. Just like boats ~ there ain't no such thing as "the perfect reel"

I've got an OC 4000 and a thunnus 4000 both are good reels but you can feel the extra quality of the thunnus over the OC. Have caught legal kings and decent snaps on both in the rough stuff so don't get to put off by the smaller sizes they can still do the damage. I did win a penn liveliner awhile back and that was ok but I passed it on to a mate and as far as i'm aware its still going fine for him.

Ive had 4 Penn Slammers Liveliners (560 x 2,760) - and in all of them, the bait runner switch has failed - either stays on or off. I wouldn't buy another.
Ive got one Shimano - a Big Longcast, bait runner and everything else has worked fine - I would buy another.

We have both Shimano and okuma   Wife prefers the okumas I dont mind have / use both
Personally I think a lot of reliability like most things, depends on good care and maintenance

I have a Shimano BTR 4000D and the Penn 560 LL. Got the 560 first and thought it was great for the price, no trouble with it so far (2+ years) and does the job on snapper. Then I got the 4000D and it was such a step up from the Penn (granted it did cost a little more), so smooth and has even battled by-catch kingi's up to 8kg without too much fuss. If you're on a budget the Penns will do a job for you, but like most things the more you pay the more reliability and performance you get

The new penn liveliners have a sealed gear box and very good grease from the factory, highly recommend these for stray lining

Sappercatcha if $$$ not the issue you can't go past Shimano Thunnuss. Penn would be my next choice.

Darren why don't you look at a low profile baitcaster. That's what I've using. I little more maintenance but you can't beat them for stray lining. Thumb on the spool then crank the handle when the fish runs.

I also use a shimano 4000D with 6kg braid and about 10 metres of 10kg mono.

Darryn, I have two Thunnus reels. Rather expensive I guess but they are very nice. If I had a criticism of them it is that they have more drag capacity than they really need. That is pretty much true of most modern spin reels IMO.

I use the Okuma avenger ABF80, could probably go smaller but I like that it has 15kg drag if I need it. Would like a nice shiny Shimano but the Okuma does a fine job.

I think this might be the plan a little saveing but im not scared of putting some cash into my gear the

reason for asking this question I geuss was I find brands live on rep like in my hunting everyone swears by leupold scopes and they are good no doubt and I have a couple but there is lesser known brands that are better and cheaper for example the Nikon monarch is the same if not slightly better at half the cost
it doesn't sound like this is the case with a shimano so ill stick with that

Had the same dilemma. Have the old shimano 10Kg 4500? set up and its never failed me and Ive been a total pig in the way I have treated it, its my "go to" rod in NZ.

I had a requirement for a "go to" rod in the tropics for game trolling, bottom bouncing, popping and micro jigging etc etc. Due to my favourable experience with shimano over the past 15 years I yesterday bought the 12000D bait runner with 15kg braid and a Tica 15KG 4 piece travel light game rod. Ill tell you how it performs next weekend around outer reefs etc. On paper it was the perfect match and Im fizzing at the bung hole to give it some action. Couple that with my new FG knot I just learnt THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN STOP ME!Tongue yes Im pretty transparent ...two very deep drams have hit the spot.
nite all
