Price not being a factor just purely looking for the best reel. How would the Accurate BX600 compare to the Maxel Sealion/OceanMax 09 on large fish and heavy drags? I feel the Maxel has the edge because of a stock long handle and AR dawgs (the BX only has a chromed AR bearing). The width on the 600 is no problem for me to Jig with.
I'm limited to only these two reels and models because buying 2nd hand.

they're both very adequate reels what ever way you go, it's more a brand preference thing.
Maybe replace the drag washers for 2nd hand reels, or at least do a visual, or get them serviced to be sure the drags are ready for the task at hand. I've got an OceanMax 08 and rate them highly.
Unless stated otherwise, the OceanMax will be the noisy version, some people can't stand them, if your one of those get the Accurate.

Noise ain't a problem with me. Well I'm actually gonna get both and sell one. My apologies the Maxel is brand new and comes w/5 yr warranty but just discounted. In the US, Maxel seems to have better service cause Accurates charge for every replacement part I believe. Accurate BX600 is used.

I have already received the Accurate and I already own a Maxel 10 in righty but I'm looking take advantage of my ambidextrousess and get lefties. Hence the Maxel 09 vs Accurate BX600 question. The accurate is grunty and very sturdy, smooth and powerful. However the Maxel feels just as smooth and powerful. Maybe a little less overbuilt and sturdy. The only thing that scares me about the Accurate is AR bearing. I believe this is an older Accurate BX where it is still a "chromed" AR bearing and not the newer better one this is a US Accurate not NZ. Other than that I feel the Accurate may have a slight edge in power and build. But the Maxel does have a stock long handle which is an adv...
Does anyone have any comments on the Accurate BXs AR system? Or How the two reels compare. May make my life a little easier in decidig which to sell lol

Where I currently stand I can't seem to justify the Accurate over the Maxels better warranty, lower price, better stock handle, and AR system. I'm hoping to be persuaded otherwise lol...

Hi,
If you want a dawg reel then go the Accurate DFS Pit Bull, only available in NZ in all sizes. They have a sealed AR bearing (the largest out of all brands) plus a triple dawg back up the bearing. Sounds good to.
There is nothing wrong with the standard AR bearing as long as it has the seal kit around it, available in all NZ Accurates and can be fitted to any Accurate model that does not have it for $60nzd.
Send to Decoro or Sword fish Steve.
If you look into the metals used to build each reel you will find the Accurate has better quantity metal.
Plus the drag plates are covered to stop the water getting into the drag area.
Accurates have a free one year service.
Accurate are much stronger through the drive line.
Accurate come with 7 odd different colour choices through the spool, drag lever, arm, knob etc.
Accurate come with three different gear ratio options, 4.1:1,5.1:1,6.1:1.
Accurate come with four different knob choices, extreme (large/small), rubber, ball.
Accurate come three different arm lengths, 75mm,85mm,95mm.
Accurates can be custom built to suit you and want you want to do with it...........
If you only need a healthy 10kg of drag the Accurate single drag Fury is a pretty good price point.
I am the Accurate agent for NZ,Ozzy,South Africa not at all trying to get into who's right and wrong here, but if you'd like to talk about anything feel free to give me a call on our toll free 0508 545 545. Kane.
P.S If you want to seal the Maxel ar bearing or remove the noisy dawgs feel free to send them my way...Smile

Thanks Kane.
I'm in the US and I believe the Dauntless would be the equivalent model but I can't afford that reel or the reels that Shawn (SDM) imports which are baller AF. I spoke to Accurate about upgrading to Dawg reel and they won't do it anymore. I actually ended up buying both the Accurate and Maxel cause price point was so good on both. I need to sell one though lol I just got both so I would regret not having bought the other.
Can you specify why the Accurate has a better drive line? And what this would mean in terms of performance?

Hi,
The Maxels or Jigging Master PE range (as it was at that time for us) are like a copy of the Accurate Boss Magnum from 5-6 years ago.
Running the same size main shaft and AR bearing.
But instead of having two AR bearings they have one with the dawgs as back up.
I do a lot of mod's where we remove the dawgs and fit an extra bearing, a lot don't like the noise of the dawgs. Particularly while jigging as the reel is wound all day.
The need for dawg came as the reels from that area did not have any seals around the bearings so if the water got in the bearing started to fail. This has been fixed for the past 5-6 years with the sealed BX AR bearing. Unfortunately for you this is something I came up with down here in NZ, Accurate like the idea but have not spec'd it as a factory feature yet. I get them to do it as part of my spec's to reels coming here.
There is no need for dawg's on an BX model if the bearing is sealed.
Anyway, the BX Accurate has a larger diameter main shaft
Larger AR bearing.
17/4 heat treated stainless gears.
Straight cut teeth.
This all means stronger drive line.
Personally for me it is not about the drive lines as such, they will both do the job, it is the 5 year plus
period where the Accurate come into their own, due to the quality of the materials they can handle being stripped down and serviced a lot longer than most other brands.
Accurate install the seal kits for me now in their factory, would you like me to see if they can do your one for you?

I pmed you. Appreciate the help. Wish I was in NZ.
Just wondering so the only reason why an ARB in the Accurate would fail is from corrosion? It would not fail from let's say fishing 15KG of drag at full?
Also why are the Maxels/JMs rated for so much higher drag? That has me puzzled.

Hi, yep have replied to the PM.
I believe it fails due to water getting in and flushing the oil out, this stops the rollers working how they should. No it does not fail because of 15plus kg of drag. No fails over the past 5-6 years with the seal kit.
There are different ways of stating drag out puts,
Total max drag and safe working load.
Accurate prefer to state a safe working drag,
I.e at 15kg the reel can run red hot day in day out and stay smooth, mint and reliable.
At the end of the day you can pretty much lock the spools up if you want to.
We need to remember we are trying to land fish not rip their lips off. A slipping drag is a good thing it is the give in the system. Remember to get a spool running line out at 15kg the shock load right before the spool starts turning can be 4-5 times that of the drag setting, the higher the drag setting the higher the shock load. Personally I don't fish anything over 15kg on 37kg line, the reality is something else in the system will give, i.e, fishs face, leader knots/hooks etc.
I believe there is marketing hype behind a lot of these drag rating out puts. Both the other reel brands quoted are copies of the Boss Magnum Accurates (now old models) they never state how smooth or reliable these reels are at these so called settings.
At the end of the day all three brands stated can all pull 15kg which is fine on a 37kg line.
I will say just to finish, the Accurate has a sealed drag system the other two don't, the dryer system will be the smoother more reliable one long term.
Hope this helps.
