Nice snapper John They're a great fight on fly at that size.
I think I know where you're fishing. Caught some of my first good sized snapper rock fishing there as a teenager
Looking for similar action around here at the moment. Having to be content with pannies at the moment. Anticipating a size increase as winter comes in.

Been a bit slow here; thought I'd post a TR. Got back from Hawaii Thursday night; everything you see here is the same there (rampant inflation; shortage of hospo staff etc etc) - its never been a 'cheap' trip but now its very very very expensive and my credit card bill will be an issue for Future Nick to deal with... anyhow I digress, no, I did not chase bones up there, it was a family hol.

Headed for TGA early Saturday, snot little sthrly and overcast first thing, decidedly cold to be fair. As morning wore on and sun burned through the vis improved until it was actually quite ideal. Black buses (short-tails) seen: 7, rays holding kings 3, free swimming kings seen 2, kings hooked 3, kings landed zero (dont ask!). I got off the water about 3pm feeling like it was just what I'd needed.

Even though I said "don't ask" it's worth talking about the low success rate post hook up. Twice I got what I know from experience to be good solid hooksets (sharp SL12s 4/0) and pulled the hook druing the fight. I was going hard on my #8 just to roll the fish asap, but I cannot remember pulling a hook often, let alone twice in a day on YTKF. Strange. The third was straightforward. Rather than using a proper knot to attach some tippet to my leader I cheated and double surgeoned on a piece of 8kg. I know better than that. The knot parted on the strike, pay the price for laziness twice in that one of my all time fav flies swam away with that fish.

Had an absolute blast at the Saltfly Fest on the weekend. Great people, all levels of experience, basecamp location (Bowentown Beach Holiday Park) fantastic. Fishing day (Saturday) was notable for the lack of kings, although Mike Limmer got one on the Friday before and two on Sunday after the fishing day. He earned the good karma for organising everything - sponsors, catering, program... I took Justin Cahill out on Saturday. The morning tide was good for kings but the weather was gusty (unusually a full Westerly) and overcast. Spotting was improbable. We spent some time blind casting for trevs, then had a solid afternoon session on big kahawai workups.

We finished the day on a sand bar fishing for snaps and trevs. Justin scored 4 or 5 snaps while I focused on hooking a decent bronzie who buzzed us. He accelerated for the shark fly but turned away....

I'll be back.

Nice pics Nick. Looks like you had a good weekend.
Try a silvery anchovy sized anchovy fly for bronzies. That's what I've hooked three on. They love anchovies!

Hey there team. Haven't been on the forum for a while. Had a few issues logging in, but I think it go them ironed out for the moment, thanks to Grant.

Me and the wife just booked a trip up to Russell and further north for the end of September. Looking forward to it now. Hit those beaches and hopefully get into a few fish. Escape the wintery south. Il keep you posted crew 😎

No luck getting a hold of Craig unfortunately.

Beautiful part of the world, however the weather is knocking us around a bit.   Hopefully this week the wind will finally abate and I can get out and find a few fish 😎
